No Need To Pull Them | Bolting Veggies | Edible Radish Seed Pods | Guten Yardening
In early April we planted four varieties of radishes here in zone 5 Wisconsin. These varieties, Purple Plum Radishes, Sichuan Red Beauty Radishes, Japanese Minowase Daikon Radishes, and Japanese Wasabi Radishes, have been growing for the past month plus, and we have been harvesting them and enjoying them for the past few weeks.
Two of the varieites, the Purple Plum Radishes, and the Sichuan Red Beauty Radishes grew well, but the other two varieties went to seed.
In this video, we harvest some amazing radishes, show you how we test for Nitrogen levels in the soil, and we discuss the likely causes of them going to seed, and some of the possibilities for what we can do with them even though they bolted. If you have ever wondered, can I eat radish leaves, or can I eat radish seed pods, then this video is for you. Edible radish seed pods are a great side benefit to radishes bolting, in addition to edible radish flowers.
So, even though we had some unexpected results from two of the varieties, we are still able to each most of what grew, and we have plans for a planting in the fall to see if these two varieties will perform better for us at that time.

It is well worth the investment.

Do you blanch whole radishes?
good job brother,,,nice to see your gardening techniques…
Some of my radishes bolted, As well. Nice to know that all is not lost. Another great video!
I planted Daikon, Watermellon & French Breakfast radishes and the Daikon bolted. Now I'm waiting for seeds to mature while I eat the other two varieties.
6:15 Bugs was wanting you to hurry up so he could finish feasting LOL
Thanks for the tips my friend…my radishes bolted too…everything that took more than 30 days…
I’m just going to harvest some radishes 🙂 super excited! I wanna try some other varieties too. Tnx for the vid.
I planted 4 varieties this year and two bolted. The daikon and the watermelon (which I think is a daikon variety) bolted. They are both new varieties for my garden, so thanks for the theory and I will plant them as a fall crop.
Thank you! Nicely detailed information!!! You have another subscriber with 'all' ringing bell.🙂🌈
Thanks for the information because I was wondering why my white icicle radish bolting with no bulbs. Yes I planted mine at the beginning of spring and here in South Africa our spring is like summer. I am glad to know the reason so that I can next time estimate when to plant my radish. Thanks again.
I assumed you would talk about attracting pollinators! I have 1 bolted so far, but ill leave it to seed. If I get more ill taste it. Thanks for the info!
So, in Florida, I'm out of luck? 🥺
Planted radishes too late and they bolted. I never knew they were cool-season veggies or that they are still edible. Totally changed my garden game! Thanks 👍
Great info 👍. Will be saving my bolted ones for seeds and tasting those flowers.
Great stuff! Currently have about 2/3 of a 10 m bed full that'll probably be bolting in the very near future and not ready to flip yet. Edible flowers is a great win win
Mine bolted the weather was extremely unstable it was extremely hot than cold days, I was happy to find out all not lost we can eat the flowers thanks a million’s 🙏🏾
This yeah was my first year planting radishes and they were very small lol
I saw my first bees of the season finally hanging out with the radish flowers.
