  1. I garden in zone 5b and we live in a wooded area. So, keeping gardens natural is the way I have gone, but love a formal look. Soooo, have several potted up topiary style evergreens that just happen to appear as you are walking the paths around our home .Loved this video, thanks for the excursion.

  2. Thank you Danielle! We ran out of time to see Mt. Cuba on our visit and will definitely add it to the list. It's very beautiful!

  3. I love it. This garden probably isn't too far from me, I'll have to check it out. I agree the trial garden is something special. Thanks for having us tag along.

  4. Thanks for taking us along. Always great to see what is going on in other parts of the country. & wow, 50 acres of gardens is impressive. Would love to groom our woodland area up like they did. 🌲

  5. Mt. Cuba has been on my bucket list for a few years! They have such amazing trials with so much detailed info – it would be awesome to see what they are trialing in person. Wonderful tour 🙂

  6. I really love this prairie garden style. I've tried to recreate it in my garden in the UK but so far haven't had much success.

  7. Hi Danielle, I did like the formal garden design mixed the naturalistic garden design, I think a nice addition to each quadrant of the gardens surrounding the fountain area would be to add an obelisk in the center of each quadrant to add some height, and vertical interest so your eye doesn't just rest on the blue of the fountain area. Great idea to add some height with the pots of juniper mixed with the Agastache, caryx, and verbena bonarensis. It is a lovely peaceful place, and I am so happy you were able to go. The large pond and woodland path drew me in! What a wonderful day you must have had there!! Thank you for sharing it with us. it is much appreciated. 😍

  8. With regard to your stokes aster question: I have a nice clump growing for years (as well as some new england aster) and no problem with pests or aster yellows. Zone6b. Plant some! They look great in the fall with the back drop of dried hydrangea blooms or with some amsonia.

  9. I do grow stokes aster and (so far) haven't had any of the issues with it you mention. Mine is in full sun in clay soil in 5b. I love it! Thanks for taking us along on another wonderful tour.

  10. What a beautiful garden and property! I would love to see the interior of the mansion! It looks fantastic 😍🥰

  11. Mt. Cuba’s research is great! Thanks for this tour. I was there 5 years ago. Good combo for the front of your house.

  12. I've had Stokes asters for years and have not had any of the things you asked about. They are a flower that I find hard to tell the buds from the spent flowers. They do need deadheading eventually as the longer stalks that hold the flowers don't die back on their own.

  13. I have enjoyed your videos for a long while, especially the transition of your Grandma’s Garden. I am 76, an garden in upstateN.Y., Finger Lakes area. My style keeps changing the older I get! I have grown Stokes Asters for many years and have never had any issues with any pests or blights etc. They are in full bloom right now, usually they are later in August. This year has been a bit different than others. Thank you for all your beautiful videos, you certainly make a difference in this world! My Grandma also had a big influence in my passion for gardening, especially with her Dahlia’s.❤️Gail

  14. I visited Mt. Cuba 2 years ago. Such a different garden from Longwood which is not too far away. I enjoy doing some of the on-line classes they offer since I live too far away to do them in person. In fact, it was the class on hydrangeas that gave me the idea of planting Haas Halo in my garden. I inherited Stokes Aster from the previous owner and have no issues at all with it. I pretty much ignore it, and it thrives. I garden in Maryland, zone 7.

  15. I love this formal design with a relaxed feel. The color palette of the plantings is very soothing and pleasing to the eyes. Thank you for taking us on this tour Danielle! Looking forward to more 🙂

  16. 2:25. I could be wrong, but I think the grass in those pots is one of my favorites, stipa tenuissima, which was recently renamed to nassella tenuissima, or Mexican feather grass.

  17. Don't like it. But because of years now of drought in our high desert previously zone 7 (now considered zone 8 in Central California )….we have almost been "forced" to take our lawns out and we are on just under one acre…..so we are trying to mix contemporary planting with bushes, grasses, and aloes to do "something with it". We have about twelve old oaks on our property from 47 years ago when the house was being built…(so our same grass lasted that long). and we also planted 3 birch trees, a honey locust and the landscaper put in a "sugar bush" which we still have and it is thriving…so that is our structure….but I tell you it is a real challenge to start over and try something entirely new at ages almost 80 for me and almost 82 for my husband…we or mostly myself keeps looking online or my garden gate magazines to get incentive and guidance
