Balcony Gardening: Growing My Own Vegetables In My Apartment Patio! | Jolene Foliage

I started growing vegetables in my small apartment patio a little while ago, and I have found joy and peace growing my edible container garden. As a city dweller, my craving for nature has always been tremendous. I’m constantly trying to reconcile and combine the two in a harmonious coexistence by bringing nature home to my sunny balcony. However, my balcony was never the sanctuary I wish it could have been. I decorated with rugs, with furniture, with trees, with grass but there was always something missing. Until recently, I started to realize how much I’ve missed out with the wasted balcony space I have had in my previous apartments. I’m missing an edible garden and the smell of the fresh soil. Growing my own food in my balcony garden has inspired me to take an interest in the origins of my food and make better choices about what I put on my plate. And most importantly for me, I’ve learned all about developing patience and easing my anxiety. Starting from painfully waiting for the seeds to sprout day by day to fully enjoying and embracing the cultivating process, I sowed seeds of kindness, mindfulness, acceptance and love, and flushed out the weeds of indifference, selfishness, gluttonous and anger. As I water my vegetable garden, I’m fertilizing the garden of my mind. What’s your patio gardening story? Share it with us in the comment!

  1. So calming 🙏🏼 I’m growing some baby cucumbers which look like very small melons I love seeing them thrive 🥒🌱

  2. your words were really beautiful ☺️ i just started my first seedlings and this video has me excited, thank you!

  3. I’m growing tomatoes, garlic, jalapeños, and tons of herbs! I am also trying to grow broccoli 🥦 not sure if that’ll work 😊🌱

  4. I grow tomatoes, lettuce, nasturtium, chillies and herbs in my garden. I also sow my seeds here for the most part and raise til they can go in my allotment. I grow lots of flowers in my garden too! I have lots of vegetables in my allotment. I agree with your sentiments about mindfulness and positivity through growing. My allotment has helped me immensely following the recent death of my father and I would recommend growing to anyone especially for your mental health 🌻

Edit – forgot I also have radishes in my container garden 😇

  5. We started our first garden this year. We are growing corn, carrots, snow peas, tomatoes, potatoes, radishes, brussel sprouts, and jalapeños. We've harvested and reseeded the radishes. Everything else is still growing.

  6. You've got some pretty good ideas, I've been wondering what to do with the space on my balcony. I'm going to try out vegetable gardening on my balcony, maybe it'll even help me with my own anxiety and give me a calm space to go and relax with nature right outside my patio door. I love the smell of soil and I can imagine it would be a lot of relaxing fun to focus and put love into such a project. Thank you for the inspiration.

  7. This is what I was looking for! I wanted to know if there are other people who are living in apartments and want to have an edible garden on their balcony! I am thinking about using the frame of my balcony bench to fill it with soil and grow some veggies! I am not sure how to do that in terms of making the walls for the raised bed. Would you recommend some type of fabric/tarp? Does it have to be breathable? Thanks

  8. Hey @jolene! Can we get an update on your garden? I have so many plants to name but I've started a Moringa tree and will keep it small since I have a tiny patio where I live

  9. I would love to connect with those who like to grow on the balcony like me. I have a small Balcony in Singapore home but i can grow a lot of plants, flowers, and fruits…..feel so nice.

  10. So glad I found this video!!!! I’ve been looking to get started gardening 👩‍🌾 the words are so kind from you. I’ve always had two plants over the last 5 years I took care of. Always found joy in watching them grow and taking care of them.
