Summer Muscadine Harvest & Chat || Black Gumbo

Come along and harvest muscadine grapes with me! The grapes are just about the only positive thing in the garden during a super hot and dry summer. I’ll also let you know what the near future of the garden is looking like, and what out plans are here. Thanks for enduring my time off from the garden, I am grateful!

Black Gumbo shares our suburban, backyard, sustainable gardening efforts. We work a small-scale teaching garden, much like the typical Zone 9a backyard garden and raised beds, the kind of gardening accessible to all. We also grow lots of fruit and berries. We tend to take the slice of life approach and hope you will enjoy our family, our dog, our cooking, our adventures, and occasionally some commentary and advice. We love family, joy and friendship, and we invite you to enjoy these things with us!

  1. Smart man! Be sensible and take care of yourself Scott. It will be a treat when you are able to share videos again. Something to look forward to!

  2. Thanks for all the grape guidance! This is my third year with one muscadine and one concord. Make jam instead of jelly. It's easier and so tasty. Mine in Virginia aren't ripe yet, but the yield is looking good. I was pleased this year to get some fabulous blackberries. As long as I beat the birds each morning, I'm getting a handful to a half pint every morning. It's petering out now, but they were so tasty. Birds got virtually all of my young blueberry plant yield. Fall squash worked well for me last year. Earlier in the season there were too many borers. This is looking to be a good pepper, cherry tomato, and eggplant year too. I'm growing ginger, lots of herbs and a ton of sunflowers. It's definitely a great (but brutally hot) season!

  3. I tried planting bronze and black muscadine grape seeds from grapes I got from the store but none sprouted 😢

  4. Help! I've been waiting for you to post again. It has nothing to do with muskidines but I bought a fig plant and don't know what to do with it! I am embarrassed but need help, I want to plant in a bucket like you do. What soil do I use?

  5. I'm going to add some grapes to my garden this year. I had some growing at all my previous homes….love them. I am also in Wine country in South Australia. Barossa Valley is about 20 minutes from me.

  6. If you're just looking for content that doesn't require you to go outside, you can always do some indoor mushroom growing. I can't point you to any one supplier that is better then the next, sorry about that. I'm quite sure others are more then happy to help you out (or help themselves out) in that matter.

  7. Hello
I live in AZ and our temps have been 116 to 120 degrees. My garden took a big hit😢 all died and the rest did not grow.

  8. I just returned to Texas after 3 weeks in Alaska and Colorado with my sons. My garden took a hit as well in this heat. My family watered for me but only enough to keep things alive. 3 of my 4 muscadine vines have all crispy leaves. I lost all my elderberry fruit but the trees survived. There were various other hits but I’ve been upping my watering to which this heat is no friend of. So, I definitely know how you feel Scott. This has definitely lit a fire under me to try and set up some type of automatic irrigation system. You try to stay cool and I look forward to your return once some of this heat lifts. Blessings! 💜

  9. The heat is so dangerous, here in AZ the news is reporting on heat related deaths every day. I was out shopping last week and was overcome with the heat. Better to be safe than sorry. Look forward to your fall garden. TFS 🌵👍

  11. Good to see you again, Scott! Thanks for letting us hang out with you as you harvest. No worries that it's been a while. It's brutal where you are, so take care of yourself and stay cool!

  12. It's way too hot to be out in the garden. Even up here in 6a it has been in the 100s. Take care of yourself. We will still be here whenever you post.
