Wrong if the leaf is green it is still photosynthesizing. This is done to help direct more energy to the top and help with air flow to expose those green tomatoes to the sun to help them ripen up

I noticed you have marigolds in your garden, great bug control. Try peppermint and Basil, good also and you can cook with them.
