Building a Japanese Inspired Fence

Hey guys,

I am building a fence for my Japanese garden today.
I am doing my best to use all wood construction without nails or screws (except for a couple). This is my own design and I am putting into use all the tricks I can come up with. Enjoy!

I am uploading weekly. Don’t miss my next video!

  1. Great to build things. Even as an amateur , sometimes especially so. Great results, But please consider your safety more !

watching the dowel slit/cut, secured by your hand, while in the background is a workmate that would reduce tendon damage risk substatially if used, was just terrifying to watch & more so to imagine others copying.

Top power tool tip. stand to the side of your work and the direction of travel of any rotating blades !

secure work before spade drilling & not while sitting

    otherwise, great result

  2. I did a number of projects like this, and my advice…when you're done, paint the exposed wood, bamboo surfaces with clear, marine spar varnish. I used McKlosky's Marine Spar Varnish…the original formulation (with VOC's). It's called Man o' War and has a picture of a racehorse. Otherwise the wood will oxidize and discolor to a uniform battleship grey.

  3. Young man, do you not have a circular saw? I realize that may be all you had, but if you had an angle grinder & drill, one would presume one would have a circular saw. And was that a tree pruning hand saw? Friendly advice: use the proper tools (especially if their basic) specific for the job at hand & for Pete’s sake, use gloves & proper technique when using power or hand tools. You made me cringe many times. We all begin sometime – I understand that, but common sense also has its place. Keep on doing tho. Good effort.
