Forged Down Under | Ep1 | Part 1 | BBQ | Battle of the Blacksmiths Australia

“Forged Down Under” is filmed in Queensland, Australia, at the Savage Custom Creative workshop. Savage Custom Creative specializes in knife making and blacksmithing classes. Our goal is to get as many people interested in and participating in our hobby.

“Forged Down Under” was created to showcase the Australian talent we have in the knife making and blacksmithing community and hopefully get more people interested in our hobby! We also aim to make the industry more friendly, as we’re all here to help each other.

Each episode is split into two videos – Part 1 & Part 2. Each episode has a theme and is made up of 3 rounds. Contestants receive a challenge that they must start in round 1 and finish in round 2. Each round is judged based on a rubric and the final score from both round 1 & 2 combined, will decide who moves on to round 3, where they will get a new and more advanced challenge. The winner of round 3 will become a “Forged Down Under” champion.

“Forged Down Under” is unique, as we only give the contestants a theme to follow, and the creativity of how they interpret the theme is wholly up to them. This creates a much more fluid and entertaining approach. Sometimes, giving fewer guidelines is better, as contestants have to battle the urge to overcomplicate the build in a time-constrained environment.

Our judging is also different. We judge the contestants on a rubric for Round 1, based on three categories, with a 1-5 points scale per category, per judge. Then, in Round 2, we judge them on a more complex rubric of five categories. This gives the contestants who think about their approach a more strategic path. If you’re smart, you can guarantee high points in a couple of categories or maybe aim for an average across all categories.

We hope you enjoy our show, “Forged Down Under”!

  1. Awesome work. This was a brilliant show and i can't waut to see the rest. I like the forged in fire shows as well as there's no bullsh1t politics just watching the craft.

  2. It's a good thing their in Australia and not California. That micarta they are grinding on causes cancer in California. Fun show.

  3. Loved the show team – great to see that you care about the local industry and the knife makers community in Australia

  4. After watching forged in fire and never seeing them properly temper a blade , I just saw them quenching. You brought me back to reality. well done. Such an important step!

  5. Just awesome. Love seeing it be more about the process and less about the show. Great contestants and definitely something to work towards!

  6. Amazing show doing great things for Blacksmithing and Bladesmithing in Australia! Great work again thank you!

  7. Well done Shane and your team. I'm not a massive fan of some other comp's but what you have done here is brilliant. It's a real comp that allows the participants show their true skills without a massively hindering time frame. A job well done for the first one, and it looks like you guys are well on the way to a great series and show. Love it guys!

  8. Okay that was really entertaining. I don't forge but know someone who does. Over the years I have picked up some knowledge of the terminology and processes involved. What I loved most was the typical laconic aussie sense of humour. Great series please, keep it going.

  9. THIS SHOW IS EPIC
    Raw, uncut, honest work. Brilliant.
Love all the interactive footage between judges and competitors, and thorts and processes that we all get to to see.
    Cheers

  10. This is awsome!! Love it! Now another rabbit hole i can go down, great having inspiration and to see.local guys doing such an amazing job!

  11. After a very long time, heres a great show / competition! Looking the fact that its a competition and stil Rob being Rob is helping out others! #BELIKEROB
Great job putting it together Shane. Looking forward to the rest of the series! Cheers!

  12. Is it just me or did I miss where they stated the BBQ theme is knives only? He did state it was a very broad theme to choose from. Why not make a spatula or BBQ tongs instead of a knife? That clip would have been perfect for tongs… extra points for the bottle opener handle – in my eyes anyways! Good first episode.

  13. this was awesome! the only thing that needs to be changed IMO is to do the sharpness test BEFORE destruction test.

  14. Wow very cool show guy's I do hope you keep them coming. Seeing the tempering done with torches the old school way got me hooked and made me sub., great job all much respect!

  15. im excited for this, subscribed right away, just started the video! metal working is so important for every civilization, can't have bends or delaminations!

  16. What I like about this is that so much of blacksmithing/bladesmithing is personal preference. Where FIF was so set on the technical aspects, you guys are a little more forgiving because of that person preference aspect. And then during your filming you were getting more discussion with the smiths about what they were doing. Glad I found you.
