Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Is Kevin actually giving you a discount for promoting him on your channel? LOL. I think the seeds that come with the pamphlet, are the ones that they put the seeds in a small mylar bag and are also the ones that are hand counted, (The ones you pay more for).

  2. They label seeds, non-GMO or foods gluten-free for example because they know those are trigger words. It is completely marketing. People are going to run to those that advertised. They are not GMO and assume that everything else is I see it all the time it drives me crazy. Same thing with marketing food and stores labeling it non-GMO or keto. They know it’s a trigger word people are going to see it and they’re going to buy it because they don’t do their research they just assume everything else on the shelf has gluten or has carbs whatever they’re trying to avoid.

  3. This is wonderful, Jess! Thank you!
I do wish that when you are showing the seed packet you’re describing, you could hold it still for a few seconds, like you do with some other materials. Gesturing while holding a seed packet makes it nearly impossible to see it clearly. I’ve tried pausing the video, but can never get it to stop at the correct spot 🙄

  4. Rainbow swiss chard when young, is delicious in salads, tastes like spinach

  5. Fun thing that I do…I put my 7 month old in his bouncer and I will sit in front of him with my big seed purse and show him all of my seed packets and tell him all about each one 😆

  6. I spreadsheet my seeds now because I may buy too many. I put all the information from seed pickets in the sheet, year to year results, track starts, plan/map beds, everything. It helps me to not buy things I forgot to and to be more present instead of trying to remember everything.

  7. I had a package of Federle tomatoes from Seed Savers that was 12 years old and still had 70% germination rate this year 😊.

  8. Thanks for giving a clarification about GMO seeds. That has long frustrated me when its used as a marketing tactic – makes no sense for the home gardener. As you said, kinda like using "gluten free" on a pineapple 😂

  9. I LOVE fresh green beans with garlic mayo, or aioli, or blue cheese. YUMMY! I also love snap 🫛 fresh.

  10. Seems like every cabbage I grow is a trap crop. Aphids love it. I now just feed it to my chickens.

  11. I love swiss chard in my salad. Daikon radishes and others make a great tasting fermente. 😋 thanks for sharing your seeds with us 😊

  12. I said I wasn't going to buy anymore seeds. Now that I'm watching this video, I fell off the wagon and I'm ordering more seeds!

  13. Those seed packets art is beautiful. I THINK if you were a crafty person you could make art out of them or how cool to decoupage something with them..

  14. Thank you for all the extra information about each seed. It is good to know why you bought each seed and how you use the product.

  15. The deer eating all the flowers around my cucumber and Alyssum are super suspicious to me now lol

  16. I love you comparing us and seed Gaul videos to kids and their toy unboxing videos 🤣 it’s SO true 😆❤️

  17. Jess have you tried growing Mashed Potato Squash? We tried it this year and oh my gosh it was amazing. We roadted it with avacardo oil and salt and pepper….kids loved it. Also North Georgia Candy Rocker was AMAZING as well. both new to us this year and quickly our new favorites!

  18. you are such an enabler, Jess! Botanical Interests is one of my favorites, I have been buying seeds from them for ages. Now I need to shop. I think I like that new packet design.

  19. Hearing you talk about the excitement of seeds totally broke me. I've got a lot going on right now. And I've gotten a few seed orders that I wasn't even excited about because I'm so depressed. I haven't even been able to watch my regular favorites on YT as they post. This too shall pass. But man everything hurts right now.

Thanks for being such a beacon of light for so many people.

  20. I loved your seed uhaul videos and your excitement about each seed package it make me happy to be gardening in the fall too.😊

  21. This was fun! I went through the entire Botanical Interests catalog while listening to Jess and bought a few things. The free shipping is great! And yes, I like supporting Kevin (and Jacques, of course) in their endeavors. Epic Gardening is in my USDA zone and their advice has been extremely useful.

  22. Im sure Im the only one like this, but I dont want to buy a plant off of a painting. I want to see the actual picture of what Im buying. But im sure thats just me. It was fun seeing what all Jess bought tho!

  23. I have been following you this year. I live outside of Charlotte….way outside! I really enjoyed this info. I have been growing food 15+ yrs, but really liked hearing what can grow in our areas. I do feel like we share the same seasons, and I have struggled growing some. Ty so much

  24. Tractor Supply puts all of their present year seeds in the dumpster in August. I have been known to dumpster dive. 😂😂😂

  25. I keep adding seeds to the cart. But then I tell myself, no you have so many seeds. But I want to grow everything!!! I overwintered carrots, I definitely do not need carrot seeds, so so many seeds and more coming. Thank you for waiting on us to open your box of goodness. Always enjoy seeing what you'll be growing.❤

  26. I Love seed haul opening videos! They are exciting, inspiring and helpful when I go to order. Its like Christmas morning in the middle of the year! Thank you so much for your enthusiasm and all your inspirational videos. God Bless you and your family and the other people that help make your homestead beautiful and thriving. What you do is labor intensive, time consuming and I'm sure exhausting. I don't see how you put all together to share with us. But we thank you so much!

  27. Swiss Chard, cooked with White Wine…game changer! Tastes like Chard piccata! Lol

  28. I just watched your old MIgardener seed haul and thought YouTube recomendacions are taking me back through the years. But no! A brand new video. 🤩

  29. Question on the rutabagas: I grew them this year and found that there were worms eating the roots! I remember my mom had the same issue when I was growing up. The flea beetles also love the leaves but I know how I can keep them off (cover!). Have you had trouble with the worms before? I live in Idaho, zone 6 ish, growing in heavy clay, on ground that was commercially farmed. Love seeing all the seeds you got! It is very inspiring! Which I am grateful for in these August/September days where I am having to find motivation to keep going in the garden!
