A Home with a Garden and Kitchen Designed as One (House Tour)

The Kitchen Garden house by Owen Architecture, a project that evolved through a process of storytelling to reconnect the home to its site and create a home with a garden and kitchen designed as one.

Owen Architecture director Paul Owen explains that the feel and the story of a space is something that evolves and is part of a narrative that is created with the client. “When we meet the clients and present design ideas, we’re essentially getting them to imagine how their life would play out in the design.”

During the design process, Owen Architecture identified that the main living spaces in the house were detached from the site, meaning that the back yard was not used. Here Paul saw an opportunity to create a home with a garden and kitchen designed as one.

In furnishing the living spaces, Toby Scott says he drew on his knowledge of the clients’ personalities to bring colour and texture into the space. Pairing a brown leather armchair with a terracotta sofa and a pink rug stemmed from knowing that the clients weren’t afraid to try something different. The round rug was a response to the round kitchen island bench, which was itself an experimental move on the part of Owen Architecture.

Evolving through a process of story-telling, the Kitchen Garden House transforms an original Queenslander into a vibrant contemporary family home that is now open and connected to both the garden, kitchen and interior spaces.

  1. Better concept is that the garden will supply the natural herbs , vegetables spices that is going to be use in the kitchen design as one where you can get your own vegetable in your own design garden (self sustaining )

  2. I like love the cool, clean, modern, minimalist feel. It’s giving me lax and calmness or maybe it’s just the men talking. I love the space, you can tell they put thought into this.

  3. Adding to a previous comment, that’s exactly how I felt: I didn’t get to really see the house (the focal point).

Your segments use a lot of very fast and closed shots that don’t illustrate much other than a tiny angle of decorations, furniture…but not the space itself.

  4. Very difficult to follow many
    architects/commentators.
They should leave it to professionals
presenting their creation instead of demolishing it with their deflated voice

  5. Any bugs in Australia ? i am in Montreal and we have window screens everywhere

  6. Went through the whole video and I'm still waiting to see the house lol. I feel so frustrated!

  7. Watched the entire video but felt like I was watching a slide show.. Heard 3 blokes gushing over products and each other.
When do we actually see the house in way that shows Hwo everything works together?

  8. If you want flow between house and garden, why put a step there? As a wheelchair user, this kind of stuff jumps out at me.
Also – regarding the video itself, the sound mix is off. The music is fighting the dialogue, making the dialogue difficult to hear.

  9. This is one of the most underrated property channels on YT. Never knew how much Australia has to offer. Inspired!

  10. I wish there was less talking, less of them and more of the house and the garden.

  11. What is the point of watching a video about a kitchen renovation without actually SEEING the kitchen?! Great story about the design process and the team, but where is the final product?! 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

  12. Hello! I really love this channel and how beautiful the videos are, but one small feedback. Would it be possible to lower the BGM music or change the music on the videos to something more calming? I don't know if it's just me, but I find the music to be a bit anxiety inducing. Thank you!

  13. This video is a waste of time, not much of a tour at all and lots of footage of some guy talking about something 🤷‍♀️

  14. Redesigning a kitchen area which incorporates the backyard is such a beautiful combination because there is this wonderful connection between meals which either take place in an outdoor garden area or that look out to a garden area whether one is entertaining friends or preparing meals for the family. The neutral palette with beige, brass, and the silver stove is a lovely pairing.

  15. I love this small cosy houses. If I won the lottery, I would build a whole little village like this.

  16. Is this to showcase the house or to listen to the ideas of the designer? I didn't get to see the whole house just glimpses. N
