  1. I cut my fuzzy seed heads a while ago and have them sitting in a dry place waiting until I have time to separate the seeds. This video is a good reminder it has to be done still. Hopefully they can wait until my tomatoes are canned. Planted 150 tomato plants so I have a lot of canning. I got most of my seeds from MIgardener and from the spring seed swap. That seed swap was so much fun. My favorite tomato from MIgarder is the Federle even though I had little hope for the wispy sad looking seedlings. My favorite seeds from the swap were the dwarf Tasmanian Chocolate. I want to put out a big thank you to the lady who brought those seeds and to Luke for hosting the swap. I hope to attend the next one.

  2. Have you ever done seed gathering into a new bucket that for some reason or another has Static Cling?? it will mess your day up! Cheers from AZ!

  3. Good call! Watching my black seeded Simpsons make a lifetime of future runs with plenty to share and exchange. 🍻

  4. Never plant the lettuces and mustard greens next to each other and let them cross pollinate, and turn to weeds. It’s not fun

  5. Question, is there any reason that you could not put a bag over the whole seed head then gather the rim of the bag round the stem then cut stem just bellow. You could then thrash the seed head in the bag to get maximum separation. Would cut down on sticky stuff too🤪🤪

  6. QUESTION garlic scapes. The bud thing in-between the stems if you smash it there is what looks like seeds. DO YOU PLANT THEM, OR DEHYDRATE IT FOR GARLIC POWDER ?

  7. Thank you for this info. I've been picking at the seed heads every few days trying to decide if they were ready or not and saving a few that looked ok. Needless to say I was not looking forward to standing there hand picking them. This is much more doable.

  8. Great video. I planted some MIGardener lettuce earlier this year and think so of them have seeds that are ready to harvest!

  9. What if you put a sheer bag over it to catch the seed as it matures and let’s go? Similar to how I’ve seen apple trees fully covered. 🤔

  10. This is right on time! My lettuce has seeded and I was wondering how I was going to so this! Thanks again.

  11. Perfect timing on this video! I left one of my 3 favorite lettuce varieties in the ground and they are just starting to get the puffs on the flowers and I was wondering what the heck was going on?? Thanks for clarifying exactly what saving lettuce seeds looks like!! ❤

  12. Great idea. But if I plant more than on variety? Will the seeds cross pollinate?

  13. Also gold finches will eat the seeds off the plant hence their other name is lettuce birds.

  14. "Some for your enemies." I wonder if lettuce seeds would be good for the seed prank, where you sprinkle a bunch of crop seeds on a neighbor's lawn or golf course and watch them grow in between the grass.

  15. A tip for saving any kind of small seeds. When you're done extracting all the seeds you can, sprinkle the chaff into a pot of soil or an empty space in the garden. The pods and shells will act as mulch, and any seeds you missed can germinate in the soil.

  16. I figured out how to do this a few years back, after noticing they looked very similar to dandelion seed heads. If all the fuzz doesn't released right away after blowing I let them dry out longer then the fuzz dries up more and blows away seamlessly. Usually a few weeks checking periodically. Also if you want to start more lettuce for the fall I just put all the remaining stuff not worth picking through in a spot in the garden or a pot. Cover with some soil. You'll have tons of new plants come up!

  17. Love all the seed saving videos! I haven't done much seed saving but this has inspired me to try. Thanks Luke!

  18. It’s very gracious of you to educate people on saving seeds when your business is seeds. Thank you.

  19. Thank you for doing videos like this! I already know how to do it and have done it many times before but- there are many that have no idea! I watched it all the way through and hope many do too to refresh or learn something new and bump your views so you’ll keep sharing seed saving 😊

  20. Great video! Thanks! 😊 I did this last year with my marigolds and grew beautiful Marigolds for this year. Such a savings instead of buying plants or more seeds I still buy other seeds from you guys.

  21. Thanks so much for a close up of the actual seeds! I saved a lot of flowers from my favorite lettuce but didn't know what to do next or what the seeds look like.

  22. But I like giving you $30-40 a year. It's only a few dollars, and look how many seeds you get. Every MI gardener seed I have bought has been well worth the moneys. That being said, Knowing how to collect seeds is important. There are a lot of great flowers that come out if you let them. My pollinators seem to really enjoy the broccoli flowers. I always have a number of plants that i "let go" for the seeds, the smells, and the beauty

  23. I have slow bolting varieties and grow them hydroponically and take the leaves over a few weeks until they're all gone so have not been able to collect seeds yet, but this is good to know in case I ever need to replenish my seeds.

  24. Thanks so much for this video! I have a lettuce plant that I let go to seed and now I know exactly how to harvest those seeds! 🙂

  25. Love your video. You taught me a realistic, hands on approach to recycling lettuce seeds. No other YouTube gardener has shown this. Thank you.
