Sonic the Hedgehog[a] is a Japanese video game series and media franchise created by Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima, and Hirokazu Yasuhara for Sega. The franchise follows Sonic, an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog who battles the evil Doctor Eggman, a mad scientist. The main Sonic the Hedgehog games are platformers mostly developed by Sonic Team; other games, developed by various studios, include spin-offs in the racing, fighting, party and sports genres. The franchise also incorporates printed media, animations, feature films, and merchandise.

Naka, Ohshima, and Yasuhara developed the first Sonic game, released in 1991 for the Sega Genesis, to provide Sega with a mascot to compete with Nintendo’s Mario. Its success helped Sega become one of the leading video game companies during the fourth generation of video game consoles in the early 1990s. Sega Technical Institute developed the next three Sonic games, plus the spin-off Sonic Spinball (1993). A number of Sonic games were also developed for Sega’s 8-bit consoles, the Master System and Game Gear. After a hiatus during the unsuccessful Saturn era, the first major 3D Sonic game, Sonic Adventure, was released in 1998 for the Dreamcast. Sega exited the console market and shifted to third-party development in 2001, continuing the series on Nintendo, Xbox, and PlayStation systems.

While Sonic games often have unique game mechanics and stories, they feature recurring elements such as the ring-based health system, level locales, and fast-paced gameplay. Games typically feature Sonic setting out to stop Eggman’s schemes for world domination, and the player navigates levels that include springs, slopes, bottomless pits, and vertical loops. Later games added a large cast of characters; some, such as Miles “Tails” Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, and Shadow the Hedgehog, have starred in spin-offs. The franchise has crossed over with other video game franchises in games such as Mario & Sonic, Sega All-Stars, and Super Smash Bros.

Sonic the Hedgehog is Sega’s flagship franchise and one of the bestselling video game franchises, selling over 140 million units by 2016 and grossing over $5 billion as of 2014. Series sales and free-to-play mobile game downloads totaled 1.5 billion as of 2022. The Genesis Sonic games have been described as representative of the culture of the 1990s and listed among the greatest of all time. Although later games, notably the 2006 series reboot, received poorer reviews, Sonic is influential in the video game industry and is frequently referenced in popular culture. The franchise is known for its fandom that produces unofficial media, such as fan art and fangames.

  1. Unless I missed it (and if I did…shit) , I think you forgot about the Episode Shadow Green Hill as well. That one is easily the best one in Forces and while that may not be saying much, I think it's a pretty good stage overall, especially because it's actually difficult to S rank.

  2. My #1's

Green Hill – Between Act 2 of either Generations (Modern) or Mania
Chemical Plant – Mania Act 2 easy
Sky Sanctuary – The original, but Generations Modern gets a strong honorable mention

  3. I despise the look of chemical plant and I hate getting to it whenever I replay sonic 2. I have seen it to often

  4. im so happy you put 3-3 that high
    it's my fav cyberspace stage ever next to 2-1, 4-5, 4-3, 4-7 and 2-6
3-3 to me is basically like the open zone style similar to 2-6, it just feels so freeing, and i love the music and visuals, really fun stage

  5. i had no idea that cyberspace 1-2 was windmille isle act 2 until now. my two favorite levels in both unleashed and frontiers

  6. You could technically say that the Death Egg is the fourth most recognized classic stage by Sega. It got a boss in generations and a few stages in Forces.

  7. I like the new avatar but it needs a bit of work because it’s painful to look at because it’s like really out of sink with the audio but I do love the expressiveness

  8. Great video love ranking videos. I disagree completely tho lol. Cyberspace is fun and i enjoy them but Generations level design is far better than Frontiers and feels much better to play and i would not have any Frontiers stage over Generations in terms of themeing. Planet wisp aside. Live 4-3 Rumble Rave i think is a great level and for its gameplay style might be more fun they say Green Hill Act 2 Gens as thats super linear and narrow. But Generations > anything in Frontiers

  9. Nah sky rail isn’t as good cuz the railgrinding sections are bland without balancing, you just hold the boost

  10. Here's how I put it

Green Hill = Sonic's resting place, soon to be his home if he's desperate (Sonic said it himself in Forces, it was his most favorite place and him seeing it get ruined is like seeing a childhood show that was an OG get a shitty reboot)
Chemical Plant = Not only a manufacturing plant that makes certain chemicals as we know, but also a secret Badnik Factory (think the Droid Factory from Star Wars Attack of the Clones, Eggman can't just make 1M Badniks by himself so he decided to add in a secret Badnik Factory in the Chemical Plant. He was probably lazy af or it wasn't a one man job to make that many Badniks)
Sky Sanctuary = A historically important location on Angel Island (think about it. Knuckles ACTUALLY helped Sonic stop Eggman in Sky Sanctuary during the events of S3&K. Plus, it's the spot where most mysteries would be revealed)

So yeah, SEGA is keeping those 3 locations alive (say what you want about Green Hill being gone or whatever) probably due to them remembering their decisions for picking zones to add in Generations. I for one think that's good for the sake of remembering how good Generations sold and that those decisions made a big impact on how well it would turn out and because I'm a Green Hill fan myself (I mean, I can't blame anyone who was tired of seeing it. I kind of thought it was lazy re-using Green Hill). Aside from that, I would also love SEGA to get in the habit of bringing back more Classic Zones for the Modern Era. Nothing wrong with SA1, SA2, Heroes, Unleashed, and Colors callbacks, but wouldn't it be tight to see, I dunno, Metallic Madness get the Modern Sonic treatment?

  11. They've stretched Green Hill Zone so much, at this point it's giving Goatse a run for its money… I'll see myself out, but no apologies!

  12. leave my boy sky sanctuary out of this, he did nothing wrong. that stage appeared in like 2 games excluding the original sonic 3

  13. Even before update 2 i always loved to speedrun 3-6 in frontiers it's arcade mode, heck personally it's my favorite cyberspace stage (Even it's an re-used level design)

  14. “When classic sonic is curled into a ball he’s very powerful, but when he’s on his feet he’s kind of underpowered”
So, just like he was in the classic games?
