MIgardener: We Planted 2 Acres Of Pumpkins πŸŽƒ and Never Watered Fertilized or Weeded – What Did We Get?!

We planted over 2 acres of pumpkins, we never weeded, watered, or fertilized! While it is pretty early, it is harvest time because mother nature had different plans. It’s time to see what we got! οΏΌ

  1. yeah, enjoy time with the family. Ironically though, milwaukee has been super dry all year, and madison even drier.

  2. What a lovely video. Thanks for sharing. Nobody likes mosquitoes. I also live in Michigan. It's been the worst the last week. Oh well. They'll be gone soon

  3. I HIGHLY recommend clothing factory-treated with permethrin. You can buy them, or send in your own stuff to be treated. It's a game changer! I have a severe gnat allergy, spouse is a mosquito magnet. I can wear short sleeves & shorts and still get no bites ANYWHERE. We just get dressed, and that's it- no icky sprays and no bites.

  4. A great win as far as I’m concerned. Plus you will probably have pumpkins come up wild next year.
Your daughter is the biggest win and her joy makes me smile.

  5. I'm across the water from you and a local farmer I often buy from said his winter squashes are all maturing very early this year.
Honestly I haven't noticed a ton of mosquitos this year. But of course a lot of standing water will result in a lot of mosquitos.

  6. im glad it was endless rainfall for you on your side of michigan, for me, it was the opposite, lol. props on the dave portnoy comments.

  7. I feed black oil sunflower seeds to my wild birds. Birds and squirrels stash the seeds for future meals and some of them grow. So I have volunteer sunflowers all over my yard. I recently watched a squirrel climb one of the stocks, chop off the flower head (about 4" diameter) and carry the whole thing away. He must have figured that he had the right to the harvest since he planted it.

  8. so good to see you out there with your daughter. my daughter is about the same age and I like to show episodes like this to her, so she can see other kids gardening too!

  9. I heard you say once in a video a loooooong time ago β€œany harvest is a good harvest”. That stuck with me. So anytime I think I failed I say that to myself.

  10. The mosquitoes weren’t bad where I am all summer until about three weeks ago then Pow it was like you had awaken a mosquito nest

  11. You got some pumpkins — that's proof of concept! The first year I tried grafting cultivars to our wild pacific crabapples, I did twenty grafts and only had one success. I thought it was a massive fail. My husband said, no, you've had one graft take, so you have your proof that it will work. Fast forward a few years, and we now have hundreds of successful apple grafts growing on our wetland property. Regular apple rootstock can't handle our heavy wet soil, so we are delighted with our "orchard".

  12. It may not fill your seed catalogue, but it certainly filled your heart and the heart of your daughter! Good job. For next year, you may want to consider mounding the rows and planting in the crest. Good job!!!

  13. πŸŽ‰ Big win! If we all had the heart of a child, we would be just thankful for whatever we have.

  14. I suggest rubbing exposed body parts with dryer sheets to discourage mosquitoes from landing on your skin. I find it helps a lot, and wear long-sleaved shirts and pants if you know you're heading into their World. I hope it helps you.

  15. So good! When we bought our first house we inherited a great garden in Mattawan Michigan and pumpkins and everything else grew like magic The previous owner must of knew what he was doing because we were never able to duplicate it elsewhere!
