Worms need a few basic necessities to compost food scraps, if they are given these few basic things, your worms will compost faster, and be more productive in general. Worms have gizzards, much like chickens. and they need something to move the soft food through their gizzard, and in a normal environment sand and other bits of course material. That all goes in to their gizzards. But when you have a worm bin, those things are absent, and rarely thought about. so it is key to add them so your worms can feel comfortable and eat and pass food easier.
