When you’re growing tomatoes and pruning them to a single stem, you need a way to keep them growing vertically. The simplest way is to tie twine to a purlin or rafter in the top of your greenhouse, and secure the stems with “trellis clips”. I prefer to use baling twine, since it won’t rot and is very strong. However, if you want to grow the 15-20 foot tall plants, you need to be able to drop the string down and move the top of the plant laterally. This can be accomplished by running a heavy wire or cable horizontally in the top of your greenhouse, and using a roller type string system. It works pretty good for tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, pole beans, and anything else that you want to grow vertically.
Also, I’ve had many requests to explain the trellis that I built for growing tomatoes last year. Essentially, it’s a souped up clothesline, designed to support a good amount of weight. Since I like to rotate crops, I’m using it for pole beans this year, Fortex and Red Cranberry.
