Raised beds are a great way to grow plants, vegetables, and herbs, especially when the soil is too rocky or tough to plant them in the ground. When a local Girl Scout troop reached out to the team at Ask This Old House about their old raised beds, the team couldn’t wait to get to work designing solutions. And general contractor Tom Silva’s design appears to be quite a challenge on its own: a double-hexagon raised bed.

But, it doesn’t have to be that complicated, and Tom shows host Kevin O’Connor just how simple it is. This guide will explain the process.

Difficulty: ⅗
Cost: Around $120

  1. swear they wanted to merge the boy scouts of American and girl scouts of American a while back due to verse reasons. don't recall if it every happened though.

  2. Goes to show you the amount of math that's used in woodworking. You learn to be very good with fractions, angles and geometry. I sometimes get into trigonometry.

  3. Tony was bleeding Kevin's mind with those measurements right off the cuff. What Kevin didn't know Tommy already had this all figured out. Shhhhh, don't tell Kevin.

  4. Very cool, but why didn't they have any of the girls in the workshop to help make it? I'm sure there were logistical/shooting schedule/legal reasons, but it's a missed opportunity to show that woodworking/trades are great for them too!

  5. This has nothing to do with this video but I built a room in my basement that has no duct work or windows . How can I ventilate the room to combat mold. Cutting the wall is no issue.

  6. I would be curious to hear your landscaper Roger Cook talk about the small gardening phenomenon book "All New Square Foot Gardening, 3rd edition" by Mel Bartholomew, which would seem to be a perfect partner for a small garden space or design like this.

  7. I had to take algebra in eighth grade so I kinda know what you're doing here, kinda. i'm grateful I got taught so well when I was in school

  8. I love this old house 🏠🏡 I've watched them for years now, only able to watch on opb channel 10 my area. Now I can watch anytime on Youtube.👌👍🇺🇸🙏

  9. This is great and all but what do you do with it? Put it directly on the ground? There's no bottom to this? You just fill each cavity with dirt? I never understand why this Old House cuts the segment short on YouTube..? This isn't television where you have to have exact minutes.. I would love if they showed longer versions online! Put the pieces in that got edited out!
