Welcome to Nourishing Traditions!

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. All I can add is if you have a cow and save your buttermilk along with your regular milk…..label the two! When I was a kid back in 1970’s we had a family milk cow. Saturday morning cartoons were a treat I looked forward to all week. My dad worked the evening shift so this meant he went to bed late. I had to be super quiet when I got up to not wake him up but I could watch my cartoons, quietly! So I went to the fridge one Saturday morning and got myself a big glass of milk. Then diligently stirred in some Nestle Quick chocolate. Took up my station in front of the TV and then took a big drink of my chocolate milk…. I had used buttermilk instead of regular milk, not knowing which was which. Traumatized for life!😂 To this day I pour out a little milk and taste it before using it for anything!

  2. I live on the Maryland side of DC and it's illegal to sell raw milk here. When I lived closer to the PA border, we would dive up and get our raw milk from the Amish. Now I get my raw milk from a co-op out of VA. I love having raw milk available.

  3. Such helpful information! The one week shelf life seems to be the very general answer for raw milk however, when handles properly it truly does last even longer! We buy several gallons every two weeks and when we’re finishing off the rest of it before our next pick up it still taste as delicious on day 14 and fresh as it did in day 1.

  4. We do not have restrictions on raw milk (as far as I know) and many farmers sell it at Farmer's markets. We also have one huge dairy farm in my city and there you can either get raw cooled or pasteurised by the bucket full ( you bring your own buckets)

  5. This is informational!! Thank you! I have been googling milk, cream and butter because I wanna get back to making food from scratch.

  6. I grew up across the road from the Magnolia Dairy in Bothell Washington during the 1950s. We had certified raw milk delivered regularly and my mom always shook the bottle so that the cream would mix with the milk and help us to grow. When we moved to Los Angeles in the late 1960s, my mom found the Alta Dena registered certified raw milk dairy in Pasadena and they delivered raw milk to our home in Granada Hills weekly! I miss having a source of raw milk now! The pasteurized, homogenized milk available even in “health food” stores just doesn’t taste like milk to me!

  7. I nearly died as a child in Italy from eating ice cream that was made with unpasteurized milk so I wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole.

  8. Raw milk is completely illegal in Florida; a state that can easily make 100% grass-fed. Still I buy it, some farms sell as not for human consumption.. It is so beneficial, specially nowadays with this terrible epidemic of immune system deficiencies and a slew of illnesses that follow it but 30 years ago you never heard of.. raw milk can help with your immune system.

  9. There are a lot of questions I forgot to ask the person I bought raw milk from. My kids and my father-in-law like the milk just fine, but to me, it tastes dirty, like something is off. I don't know if they filter the milk or their chilling process. The problem could also just be my taste buds. I've bought multiple kinds of goat cheese, and they have that same funky dirty flavor like the raw cow milk I just bought that makes me gag. I tried some raw goat milk from one of our cousins, and it tasted great. I don't know if it's dirty equipment, not chilling fast enough, the animals diet, or just my own taste buds.

  10. I think it's important to remember what additives are in American milk… pasteurization isn't the worst part… by far… there's a reason many countries won't import dairy from the US.

    American milk is HEAVILY medicated.
