mhpgardener: Garden Update – Staying Positive When Things Don't Go So Well

From June 9, 2013..It’s been a strange year for gardening. And it doesn’t seem to be getting any better. A few weeks ago, things were getting dry around here. So I started irrigating the gardens. Then a tropical storm formed and brought us 4+ inches of rain. With the excess rain, some of my snap beans have drowned. Most of the other vegetables are behind schedule, but they are coming along. The Candy onions, squash, corn, and Big Beef tomatoes are looking pretty good. If the weather would even out, I think we could make something decent out of this year.

It’s easy to get discouraged when things don’t go according to plan. With gardening, you have to be prepared for just about anything. In dealing with Mother Nature, so much is out of our control. We have to remember this, and keep a positive attitude. For me, the disappointment motivates me to try harder, to come up with ways to better handle things that didn’t go so well. For the beans that drowned, it’s pretty much my fault. If they had been on low hills, rather than flat ground, they would have been ok. It’s a hard way to learn a lesson, but it’s one that I won’t soon forget.
