Alberta Urban Garden: Picking and Planting Cold Hardy Frontenac Gris Grapes in Alberta Urban Garden

I was excited to find out from my Grand Fathers last year that grapes could be grown in Zone 3!! They both were so nice as to send heirloom concord grapes last year to me!

This year after I built a full garden trellis I realized my plans for Arctic Kiwis were not to be… I apparently am allergic and cant have them… so I decided to get some more GRAPES!!!

Grapes are one of the older domesticated plants! There is even evidence to support the fact that they were domesticated in the middle east between 10,000 and 8,000 years ago for food and wine!

When selecting your grape types doing some research is essential! They are grown in a variety of locations and climates around the world. Selecting one that will do great in your region is important!

I chose Frontenac and Frontenac Gris grapes for my garden! They were developed by the university of Minnesota and are great for eating, making preserves and Wine! Check out their website at the following URL: http://www.grapes.umn.edu

When ever you pick perennials that will be there for years and years is to select a location they can be permanently. With Grapes you will need a trellis as well as they vine. Check out how I built mine in this how-to video. http://youtu.be/2I6_9ndTM-Y

This week I show you how to plant them in raised beds for the best possible results! Check out this playlist for more great grape tips in colder zones! http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5mfR-r4BXH29R3vw5Az5-IhcCkw5XV_8

Some of my favorite childhood memories are of gardening with my parents and brothers. This channel is about low cost organic urban gardening in zone 3. I am by no means an expert gardener however I love to share my experiments and journey garden year round.
