Ginger Masterclass: Plant Once, Harvest Forever!

Feeling spicy? Rooting for some flavor in your life? Ginger has a secret which Ben will reveal in this video. Many people don’t realise that ginger can be grown from shop-bought roots (or ‘rhizomes’) and that when you know how, they can be planted once and harvested forever!

A very simple trick to save you money and spice up your life.

Ben also heads up to the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh to chat with horticulturist Simon Allan, who tends the garden’s Living Collection of Gingers. Simon offers some of his own expert tips and shows us a small selection of the literally hundreds of different types out there – prepare to be wowed!

  1. FIRST plant I ever grew was a ginger plant from a scrap of leftover ginger. Stuck it in a pot of garden soil and put it on the kitchen window (not much light) grew to top of the 4ft high window and curved along the top. Had a great scent as well. Going to try again for sure. Great video!

  2. I use to plant ginger and tumeric bought from ordinary shop as a housplants, nice to grow and then i could do my own healthy ginger or tumeric tea.

  3. 2:12 – "Organic's best…" Whoa, there. Really? Why? Better in what way? Got any data? It's certainly a lot more expensive…

If deadly pesticide residue is going to kill me after I've consumed a mere 141,000 kg of my evil, not-organic ginger, I suppose I'll just have to cut down on the ol' stir-fried veggies a bit…🤭

  4. One thing I want to ask, is it's stemp and leaf eatable or not, also how much ginger we can get every harvest. How to remove the roots and green part before we use it for food?

  5. I've succeeded in growing the Ginger lily flower I am in manchester its grown so big I've had to divide it up. Even now we had first lite frost last night, should I wrap it in fleece or cut down and put away till spring, ??
We are still having warm day, 12deg today, advice please, love all form of ginger to eat.

  6. Hello Ben, I've been considering attempting to grow ginger for some time and your video has inspired me to "have a go".
I live in Suffolk, East Anglia and have an ancient woodland forming part of my garden with Oaks, Sweet Chestnut, Holly amongst others, with a deep leaf mould covering. Do you think, that at the appropriate time of year, a ginger rhizome, planted direct into the leaf mould would work? Also, would a potted rhizome over winter if placed in, either a lidded or open propagator?
I look forward to hearing from you when you get a moment. Many thanks Wendy

  7. I grow both ginger and tumeric… I live in Florida and so it is outside all year. I believe I should be close or past harvesting as both the tumeric and ginger were planted in January, however, some ginger didn't come up for a couple of months. Last year I left the tumeric in the sun for several days and dried it to powder up. I am hoping to do the same with the ginger this year.

  8. Thank you so much! your video is more professional and informative, i like to grow veges, i often did few experimants in my home town, here in USA i grew ginger last month in september and it is growing, i need to know about which veges grown good in winter, here i tried spinich and arugula too both are growing,

  9. The ginger I've had grown locally was well, dull, aka very little heat. Hoping your recipe is better. Going to try.

  10. Really great video. I've grown ginger a couple of times and harvest the pink young rhizomes. Never thought to bring it indoors over winter. Thanks for the additional tips on using it in the kitchen.

  11. Ill be searching for good wide planters – have tio buy rhisomes but hopefully my kitchen will be ok to start them until summer (UK)

  12. I'm Asian, Malaysian actually. I have several types of ginger, galangal and tumeric. Currently ready to get another variety, it has fragrant rhizome that our people use to make ulam (kinda like salad)

  13. Thankyou for your insight, freezing is a good tip, I do that with lemons then grate straight onto salads 😊 I can see I need to add fine wood chips to my mix

  14. Have grown ginger for the last two years: Have been a bit surprised at how easy it appears to be (touch wood)! Trying turmeric too this year.. didn't think it was going to do anything, but seems to have come away towards end of year… proof will be when looking for rhizomes…

  15. I'm ready to plant, now I have an idea of what to do next. Thank you, love the videos.

  16. Ginger and garlic are also available in good quality in Pakistan
And the price is also reasonable.
There are also separate pastes of ginger and garlic which can be used for any purpose

  17. I tried growing ginger this year and it has sent up a shoot. I wasn't sure what to do with it now but following your vlog I can just keep it going hopefully till next year when I can try harvesting some. Thank you for the advice

  18. Finally the best video on growing ginger I have seen. I have learnt so much from this thank you Ben once again some of the best advice on growing your own. I planted ginger earlier this year, but have not potted them on as they grew so they are in quite narrow pots. Growing in wider pots makes sense to the way they grow. I hope I can keep mine going over winter and then get a good harvest next year now. And who knew there were so many sorts of ginger. The piece at the Botanic Gardens was great. I would love to give Turmeric ago next year too.

  19. Thank you so much! Do you think it's OK if I leave them outside through the winter being 11c minimum (at night)?

  20. Great video. Feeling inspired.

Do you happen to have any videos that discuss pest control tips when bringing plants like ginger in/out of home? I'm currently growing several tropical plants in a 4 seasons climate and have had issues with gnats and other pests coming inside with them and wreaking havoc. At this point I'm "quarantining" these plants in mesh butterfly habitats when bringing them inside – doesn't scale well.
