Thank you. This was some great advice and I learned that I did a few things wrong this year. Hopefully I'll get a good crop of shallots but if not at least I will know why. Not knowing what went wrong is the worst! Thank you. Time to grow big!
3:09 If you dig about 10-12 inches deep you will get to the "native soul". Yes, the garden has a soul.
I've not considered sets of shallots as I've never seen them grown, so now knowing that pattern, I'll see if I can't get some to add to my gardens this year.
I'm in southern Michigan, and was thinking about doing low-domes over my winter crops. Would that be a good idea?
So…what happens if the Sulphur is dust and not pellets?
Thank you for talking about what to do when growing shallots from seed. Haven't really heard or read about them being a 2 year crop. I just thought I was craptastic at growing shallots from seeds.
For zone 4 or colder your planting suggestion in the Fall is not appropriate.
Our neighborhood raccoon delights in digging up my garlic!
Bahah! Shallots and duvets are the reason my mother in law calls me a bougie yuppie.
I don't see shallot sets in your store.😢
Yay! Thank you for this! I grew shallots from seed this year and had some to plant! I found out that I'm able to tolerate shallots waay better than onion, so I wanted to grow a bunch more next year. Planted it 15 of my sets and I'll also plant more seed in the spring!
I have great luck with zebrune red shallots. Zone 5b south shore of lake superior. I start seeds in potting mix in February, in my basement under grow lamps . I use dry wall mud trays with drilled holes in the bottom (plastic ones or stainless steel ). I moisten soil (not wet) Seed sowing on the surface sow or covered lightly with soil . Then spritz with water bottle. Cover with plastic wrap. Lower the light about 2 inches above the trays. Please don’t let dry out. 10 days to two weeks for germination. After germination remove plastic wrap. When they have to about6-8 inches give them a haircut take about two inches off. May have to get another time before planting outdoors. Plant like onions 6 inches apart in rows about afoot apart. Just thought I would share. Thanks for all your hard work Luke !! Love your channel. Dean
What is the beautiful tree with red foliage at the intro of this segment? 🍁
I've always wondered if I could grow them. Thanks for this video.
When do you plant walla walla onion and red onion sets fall or spring? I am in zone 4b.
This looks like it might be fun, but I was wondering whether shallots, onions, and garlic can be grown in bags? I might not be here for next Spring so may need to make some things portable and wanted to know if that will still work.
0:27: 🌱 This video discusses the process of growing shallots from seeds and sets, comparing the planting times and methods.
2:32: 🌱 The video discusses planting shallots and the importance of loose, well-draining soil.
5:23: 🌱 Sulfur is important for planting bulbs and tubers to prevent rot, and shallots should be spaced far apart to accommodate their large size.
8:37: 🌱 When planting bulbs, you don't need to space them as far apart as cluster bulbs and you don't need to use sulfur as the plants are more resilient to rot.
11:00: 🌱 Onions need 5 to 7 hours of sunlight to bulb up, but can survive with less.

I solved all of my shallot growing problems by buying Zebrune Shallot seeds from you. I had horrible germination from 6 other varieties and 3 other companies prior.
Growing onions from seed in my circumstances in Texas is impossible. I have no room to start them inside, I live in an RV. Please don't try to tell me . . . "Oh, but you could . . ." My RV is only 26 ft long. I have no room inside to start plants! Plastic Greenhouse got one. Doesent hold the heat well enough. Plants die. Too cold when the freeze comes. It's a few weeks out for us! Luke, you should be already frozen!
Never thought about growing shallots…. Now I am!! 😄
I never thought of laying chicken wire on top of the bed to thwart the squirrels! Thanks Luke!
I followed advice for the last couple of years to plant shallot sets in Spring not Autumn (as I do with most of my garlic). Have had good returns on the crops with none of them going to seed so far. Some of the garlic I've planted in early Spring before didn't vernalise properly and gave me back a giant bulb but not the shallots.
Now I've heard you say this I'll plant them now rather than waiting, but based on my results they seem to be a lot more forgiving than garlic.
So funny. I was just looking to see if you did a shallot video this morning. There was a really old one and I was getting into the garden in the morning and just went with it. Thank you for the update and I will be pulling a few out and spacing them wider apart. Thank you again for the video it is really perfect timing😊
Trying these this fall. I got a big set .I’m in Covington Ga. Got to get them in the ground…along with my garlic real soon. Great video ❤now I know how to do these 😅
Lol! I had giant red shallots I just harvested. I must be doing something right😅. Zebrune shallots from seed got huge and jumped out of the ground.
Wonder if I should replant it and see what happens as they do want to grow again.🧐
I just topped rows with rotted bark. It looked better than the bagged potting soil I bought.
In how to grow garlic video you put trifecta in soli isn’t that gona encourage to grow green like in onions?
