Building a Backyard Garden Shed

How I built my 8’x12′ backyard shed with a gambrel roof.

  1. thanks for your comments. the shed is painted with oil base exterior paint and all the joints have been sealed with caulking before painting. barns built in the 1800's use this same technique except they used creosote instead of paint. Some have lasted over a 150 years. My carpentry teacher built a shed like this when I was 14 years old. Now 30 years later that shed is still standing. It was painted about once every 8 to ten years. for reference, look into the dutch barns built in 1800's.

  2. Nice shed. Is there any venting? I didn't see any. I would have put in a window or skylight as well. You should do your basement next. One more thing – your sister is hot!

  3. Two winters later and it still looks like I built it yesterday, very happy with the result.

  4. Shouldn't you leave a gap here and there in the foundation for air flow?
There are roof vents that are plastic and let light in too.  I like the no windows design. Less tempting for theives and gives you more storage area..

  5. Constructing a storage shed yourself should be exciting, pleasant and not hard as you think. You can even save a a lot of money.
