I've always head-canoned that the Death Note evolves with the times. In the present it's a notebook. But what if a thousand years ago, it was just a scroll. Ten years ago from today, it's a laptop with a "Death Note" website. 5 years from today, it's a cellphone. 1 year from today, it's a smartphone. To today in the present, it's an app on your phone that just appears out of nowhere.
That's just what I imagine. I feel like this has merit because in the original Death Note one-shot there was the Death Eraser which brought people back to life by erasing the name from the Death Note.
