MIgardener: What’s Growing In Our Garden In DECEMBER!

December is typically a month that many gardeners forget about, the garden is covered with snow, and we are inside for a long winter nap. But not in our garden! I am going to bring you along for all the awesome things still growing in our garden and what we plan to do going forward.

  1. I have the same thing going on, and we've had a few nights below 20° F. I am so amazed. My 4 kinds of kale look awful, but we've had a few warm days to perk them up. I am covering my carrots, and I have watered them with warm water a couple of times.
    So exciting!

  2. Just picked pak choy, bunching onion and some tiny purple kale for my fried rice tonight 😊 it’s not much, but I love it and next year will definitely GROW BIGGER 👍💕

  3. Tomatoes protect against sunburn, and the brassica family provides what the body needs most in winter. It is almost like it was designed that way.😉🙏

  4. Even if you’re not big on salads, still grow the stuff. You can always eat a side salad with the squash, pumpkin, beets, onions, potatoes, carrots, etc. that you harvested and stored in the fall.

  5. I guess it's good then that I haven't planted my garlic yet. The weather here has been back and forth. Still waiting to receive the Bulb + and Sassy Lass and for alot of my other vegetables I'm still trying to find tubing for an arch trellis. The PVC is tremendously expensive and the other tubing is a little less but for the quantity I need for a walk-in enclosure it is still kind of pricey and I am not sure what inner diameter size I need to look for that will fit over T-posts. I looked for conduit and have not been able to find it. What I find it flexible metal hose which isn't what I was looking for as an anchor for the plastic tubing. Sourcing tis stuff is harder than I thought.

  6. I planted garlic about a month ago; looked out then window today and 1/3 of it is exposed completely. Do I need to cover it with more than the same soil? Add compost? Thank you.

  7. I have lettuces, spinach, kale, parsley, cilantro, cabbages, collards, garlic and onions in beds now for a month or so. More seedlings started that will go into new beds very soon. I'm in southwest Georgia and we have a fairly long growing season. I still have basil in the pot our lemon tree is in. There is thyme in it also. Then there is sage still out in a raised bed. I'm hoping to pull most of the herbs and hang dry them.

  8. Just had a delicious stir fry of fresh harvested pak choy, bunching onions and radishes. Yay December garden! And I have lettuce still going under a protective cover. Thanks for the encouragement to try this!

  9. I actually have my winter garden covered for about a month now. I'm more in Southern MI and our pond is frozen over already. So our weather has been more on the colder side.

  10. I just put in my second order from you guys! Really looking forward to our first growing season and wondering how you store your harvests? I’d love to see a video on that since I am in Michigan as well and short on space.

  11. Do you still feel the orange roussollini is "the best tasting tomato you ever had"? I'm surprised I can't find too many people loving it. Limited garden space is a problem since I want to try more varieties than I have space for.

  12. Kale, arugula, turnips, and radishes have grown bigger than any other year before here in zone 6 right now. Still have plentiful salad greens

  13. I love my leafy greens! I am so so excited to build out my Giant garden this spring and finally be in my own home where I can experience fall/winter gardening for really the first time! I’ll have to go back next summer and watch all your winter growing videos to refresh my memory and prepare! Fall 2024 is going to be great!

  14. I got my first MI package. Thank you…the packaging is so cute and well designed. I am excited because my lighting makes it harder. I plan to save these seeds and add to my "future garden" stack. I appreciate your kindness.

  15. I decided to finally take the plunge and do a winter garden this year, with mostly the same greens under a small DIY poly tunnel! I am experiencing slow growth, but it seems that's just what to expect with these lower sun angles this time of the year!
