Wondering what to do with logs from chip drop or just looking for unique vegetables to grow in Florida? While these aren’t actually vegetables at all, mushrooms are one of the best crops to grow in Florida for a number of reasons. These low maintenance vegetables are something you can “plant” once and reap harvests from for years to come, and as a bonus they thrive in shade – something many Florida homesteading properties end up leaving unproductive. This video will show you how to grow shitake mushrooms at home with ease.

I've always been super interested in doing this, but super nervous. Great video! <3
I have also wanted to try to grow them. Have you noticed any pests that like to munch on yours such as slugs? Thanks!
Good stuff. Thank you.

Great video thnx! Could you share the source of the plug and wax please. Thank you ๐
Thanks for creating this video. I loveeeee mushrooms. Can we grow straw mushrooms in south Florida?
Wow great video and info! Well done! Iโm excited to give this a try ๐ we love shitaki mushrooms.
Hey there, long time viewer. Please do not eat those mushrooms, this is a Gymnopilus species not Shitake growing in your log. They are a native to Florida species that love eating oak and likely showed up in your inoculated logs and won the battle against the Shitake. This Gymnopilus species are very likely to be mildly psychoactive and taste bitter. I am a mushroom expert and have been helping people identify mushrooms for over 15 years, please trust me. Refer to images of Gymnopilus aeuriginosus, Gymnopilus luteoviridis, etc.
I like eating mushroom soups and I also want to try to grow them. Good stuff. From VietNam
A tip for drilling that many holes is to wrap some tape (several layers) around the drill bit at the desired depth that you want to drill. It takes the guess work out of it and speeds things up.
woahhhh so cool!
Wonderful and informative video, thank you so much! โฅ
they don't look like Shitake mushrooms
Is there a best time of year to do this? And is there a maximum number of plugs to add to one log?
Great explanation Elise!
