A guide to garden bulbs for beginners

In my latest video, I’m talking about bulbs. Ever since I started working in horticulture, bulbs have always been something that has fascinated me and I think bulbs are brilliant for your garden. From late winter flowering plants like snowdrops to spring favourites like daffodils and tulips. Space at a premium at your home or you plant on the balcony, then pop them in a container.

You can even grow bulbs indoors. You do this by forcing them. Bulbs like Hyacinths and Amaryllis are great for indoor decoration and if you start between September and the end of October, they will then flower in time for Christmas. Giving you stunning living decorations.

Bulbs will continue to flower year after year if you look after them, use the right tools, and provide them with the nutrients they need to succeed.

  1. Hi. I enjoyed your excellent video. I have a question. I'm in zone 7b, Alabama. I ordered crocus and mountain lavender lilies, received them in excellent shape but could NOT plant them when I needed to. I guess I didn't store them in a cool enough temp because they've sprouted. It's mid December with no freezing temperatures in sight. Should I plant them anyway? Will they bloom in spring? I'm at a loss. Also, I have daffodils and blue grape hyacinth that I planted at the right time…I thought…and they've all grown about three inches tall so far. I think that even though planting instructions said plant right away, I should have stored them until cooler weather before planting. I'm a newbie as you can tell but I LOVE the idea of bulbs and thinking about them as an investment. Oh yeah, my garlic is 10" tall now. I planted as instructed but it warm weather caused them to grow. I don't know if next year is going to bring flowers and garlic or not now. Lol. Any information you could share on any of these I would appreciate. Thanks.

  2. I live in California and I kept waiting for the last frost here. So far it hasn’t come. It’s now February and we are going into 80 degree weather. Is it too late to plant my allium bulbs.
I’m going to plant them into a large container. Can I still do it?

  3. Thank you. Best video I’ve seen. Such a joy to get a lot of invaluable information. Very detailed and thorough explanation.
