Coastal garden design ideas w LOTS of flowers & outdoor entertaining space 🌱 Behind the Garden Gate

Explore a coastal garden in Fairhaven, Victoria, where gardening meets seaside resilience! 🌊 Chloe from Bean There Dug That takes you behind the garden gate to discover this family-friendly paradise filled with great garden ideas and stunning features including a pond & water feature, pizza oven, outdoor entertaining space and lots and lots of flowers! This garden makeover celebrates the colour and joy of gardening in Australia – even in harsh coastal conditions.

Battling wild weather and salty air, the front garden showcases hardy plants like Casuarinas, Correa, and grasses, creating a buffer against the elements.

The whole garden is now a private oasis designed by Carolyn and the team from Ocean Road Landscaping. In 2020, they transformed the blank and boring sloped back garden into a vibrant space with a restored pond, a flourishing flower garden, and a welcoming pizza oven.

The pond, a central feature, attracts birds, frogs, and lizards, becoming a year-round haven. A cleverly designed flower picking garden replaces the old lawn, offering a low maintenance and a delightful resting spot. The water feature also includes a unique bowl at the top of the waterfall – a result of splitting rocks using wedge and feather technique.

The owners have had to embrace a random patch of coastal clay in the picking garden space, where trial and error lead to a harmonious blend of purple, yellow, and orange flowers. You’ll LOVE the majestic angophora and the privacy-enhancing screening plants, including an impressive banksia hedge.

The stone-walled pizza oven area, adorned with ‘Cousin It’ casuarina and Goldfever Grevillea, is such a welcoming outdoor entertaining space.

If you need some shade a cool spot to relax, you can enjoy the shade on the back deck, a perfect retreat close to the house, but still connected to the outdoors. And if you’re sandy from the beach, a convenient outdoor shower awaits too.

  1. I love the 'cousin it'. Saw some in a little pot the other day at the shop and didn't think much of it, but how good does it look at this scale? Like a big fluffy blanket draped over the edge of the stones!

  2. The garden is beautiful ❀
Do they have rabbits? At our holiday home on Phillip Island they are in plague proportions limiting my plant selection. Billy buttons eaten, roots and all. Yes, we did put protection around them until well established πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈπŸ˜¬

  3. Wow – they've done a lovely job of this garden. Great design and plantings. The rocks are especially well placed and arranged – the risk with rocks is that they end up covered up by plants. Thanks for the tour πŸŽ‰
