This is one of the typical styles in Japanese landscape design. Use materials such as rocks, gravel, water, and trees. Combining them becomes a miniature natural scene.
Every morning, they often rake the pebbles, turning them into waves or water ripples. A stone can represent an island, the surrounding ripples, a vast ocean.
