Gary Pilarchik: Tomato Fruit Cracking: Why it Happens, What Can You Do, It's Not Nutritional – TRG 2015

Tomatoes crack for 1 reason and it is that the plant absorbs water quickly and it causes the tomato to expand beyond the skins capacity. It stretches and cracks. Typically, in the hot days of summer, soil dries out, the plants are stressed and we water. The plant quickly draws in the water. There isn’t really much you can do. A heavy rain can crack the fruit. It is not a nutritional issue and I recommend discarding varieties that crack in your area and trying other varieties. That simple!
