Hey guys welcome back to that 1870s Homestead my name is Rachel and today we’re out in the garden doing some early uh but right on time Winter Garden planning and I needed some measurements so I brought Todd out here to help me with that and I’ll kind of give you guys

Some inside scoop on what I’m planning for the garden this year so my plans for this bed is what what is it how can I tell um 33 ft you’re all the way to the fence yes it looks like it’s a little slack okay so 33 we’ll just say 33

Ft this um garden bed um you know when we tilled it if you guys didn’t catch that video we tilled it in the fall and it expanded the bedside size that I was working with so this bed right here I have plans for keas along the fence line

Sweet potatoes in the Middle with a flower border so I kind of needed to see what is my new width and length that I’m working with um so probably how’s that go 8 ft we’ll go 8 ft so this one is 33 by8 and I didn’t have my new

Measurements so I wasn’t quite sure um first off do need as much new space as I have and am I trying to kind of cram too much food in certain spots that I can space out in other areas so or even offer to my children hey Mom’s

Got a lot new more Garden space do you want me to grow potatoes for you this year things like that so um that’s kind of I you know my raised beds I have six raised beds those are standard 8×4 ft I don’t need to measure those up ever

Again but these are all pretty much New Dimensions for me this year yep so that was the north side and we’ll check the west side next so we got to come in 8 ft to start this measurement right or we just measure and subtract 8 ft off B that’s

True that’s true I don’t know how soon I can get rid of that wood chip pile so probably just go to the wood chip pile and if I get that gone it’s going to be extra okay uh 38 ft so 30 ft right yep and then write it down write it down 30

Did you tell them what you were going to plant in that bed I did this one here is um pole beans so I’ll have a um cattle panel trellis along the back potatoes like regular baking potatoes next to it and then bush beans in front of the potatoes beans and potatoes are great

Companion plants she’s in our fancy garden planner you did a great job on it well yeah it’s draft one so we’ll see if it stays and then in this corner I’m doing like a c mini like cucumber trellis and Dill in each of the corners I think it’ll just I

Tried really really worked hard for beauty like I really wanted to be a pretty space so again I went from a peach trellis to a green bean trellis sweet potatoes to regular potatoes flowers to bush beans cucumbers d we just measured the width of this bed

It’s 8 ft and I’m fing it TDE to get off my beds and don’t walk on them more than you have to now this is the behind us let’s turn around this is the biggest new space and I honestly right now over here I’ve got my corn butternut squash pumpkins I feel

Like it’s a proper space for corn it’s going to be a little bit protected from the the wind with um this big white pine I have here and Bush Beans again in the front I don’t know that I’m going to do that 100% but this is really the corn and

Pumpkin patch I’m thinking so I need to know how much corn and pumpkin can I fit in here I think I’m only going to measure to about 2 ft from here so we’ll go the whole way and then I’ll measure 2 ft off not quite to the fence all the way

Come back in a little bit cuz I’m not going to plant that I can’t push the tape oh you have to pull okay um so that’s 17 I’m going to take 2 ft off so 15 ft 15 ft wide that’s basically double what my other widths are walking on the

Soil though it feels so soft that about right there yeah 24 ft I’ll go 24 ft okay so 17x 24 is a great size patch I’ve never had anything quite that big for corn it’s a big space it is a big space um and then the we’re heading up

To the front and I’ll go over that with you I will go ahead and tell you oh no that’s not the whole Space so cuz in here I’m going to have my I forgot about that in here I’m going to have up front my green um insect barriers what do we

Call those my row covers for bras yeah for my breast cuz I’m going to just do cabbage and broccoli and that’s how long are each one of those like 6 feet each or 4T I think they’re 4 by8 4×8 so that’s 16 ft I’m going to have to

Subtract from this whole section in length and 4T in width for that and so 16 uh all the way to these pots is 25 ft 25t and what was the width again 10 ft 10 10 ft wide by 25 250 square ft so this is a really

Important bed for me because this is where my wheat’s going to go guys I’m growing wheat for the very first time I’m so excited about this and so what will a 10x 25 space of wheat almost I’m going to have a one square foot of peppers in the front but it’s peppers

And then all golden flowy wheat in the garden how pretty all right but you guys want to know what’s going in the raised beds right now I’ll tell you that so this bed bed and this bed and then the third bed’s over so I’ve got 1

2 three right uh wide so the first row of beds and the third row of beds is carrots and onions um so I’ve got carrots onions carrots laid out like that and then some of them have celery and basil at the ends and then in the middle we’re doing onions in the middle

And pickle Bush cucumbers cuz I really need to restock the Cucumbers this year and basil so really bulking the basil up so I’ve gone over everything I’m planting this year we really grow a Staples Garden we don’t do a lot fancy oh other than on my trellis I need to

Still weed this out but I’m going to try to do my Malibar spinach over my trellis I think that that’ll be beautiful so you know I really laid out the garden space and what I want to grow and kind of how much I need to preserve which is

Something that’s in the garden layout is like I’m I’ve got goals right carrots I want to put up 20 quarts I know just from experience it’s about anywhere from 10 to 15 carots per quart jar so that tells me how many carrots I need to successfully get to canning size um and

I kind of have learned that over the years so if you guys are are just into Garden journaling with the intention of really putting up your pantry this is how my brain thinks right and then what I did from there is kind of then I needed to come and get my final

Measurements I’ll then go and work on really the seed starting schedule when am I going to start everything I failed to mention these my whiskey barrels they’re going to have artichokes in them and flowers s this year so I just started artichoke seeds today if you’re following along with me it’s

January 8ish something like that um and they need a good 3 months before you’re really in our Zone anyway to cuz I need to put them out a couple weeks before the last frost so that they have a cold duration so that they actually flower this year

So I’m excited thanks for coming out in the garden with me if you guys need a good garden planner hey I’m using it I actually told Todd it’s so funny because I referenced my um reference guides in the back that show how much to plant per square foot and I

Was uh it I found it very handy even for myself and I made it so it’s something I reference every single year and so being able to share those thoughts with you guys um and I thought it would be helpful for you guys to just follow

Along this year see how I’m using the journal how I’m putting my thoughts in practice um and now it’s up to due diligence right let’s get our growing spaces set up and uh I’ll see you guys next time out in the garden whether it’s inside getting my fingers

Dirty or back out here and mending beds or whatever so I’ll see you guys on the next video

  1. I just purchased your garden planner. We’re focusing on homesteading and self-reliance skills in our homeschool and I think your planner will be a good addition to our curriculum

  2. Could you tell me the type of cover you will be using for your brassicas? I've been trying to find the exact type for my beds.
    . Thank you in advance.

  3. I started my first garden in 2022, and that is when I found your channel. To my sadness, as I was beginning, your garden was getting ready to rest. I've enjoyed lots of your canning content and I'm so excited to follow you as you share your new garden for 2024.

  4. I am not growing many tomatoes this year. Just enough for fresh eating. Because last year I canned SOOOOOOO many tomatoes. 68 quarts of stewed tomatoes, 48 pints of tomato juice, 18 pints of marinara sauce, 9 pints of V-8. I don't have pantry space for more tomatoes. Huge blessing it was. Oh and 24 halfpints of rotel style tomatoes.
I'm looking forward to getting my seeds started. I will do tomatoes and peppers next week. Also looking forward to growing some things I've never grown before. Malabar spinach being one of them. I have one 4×8 raised bed that has carrots, lettuce, swiss chard, and spinach growing in it now. Another that has garlic and egyptian walking onions growing. 2 that have nothing. And need one more built for a spot in a corner.
Thanks for sharing your garden plans. Our gardens are about the same size.

  5. You may want to recalculate your corn patch. Corn is pollinated by wind so square patches produce more than rectangles. Also with square patches, the corn stalks will support each other in high winds.

  6. Oh to have such a lovely large garden! I am working on my own garden plans and ordered your garden journal to help make things easier. I have a new bed to plan out this year for medicinal plants and more herbs and that has me excited. Hoping we can add a couple apple trees this year as well. You and Todd are such an inspiration and I always enjoy your videos. Thank you!!

  7. Oh my gosh Rachel and Todd. You are both going to have so much fun. Looking forward to videos on your progress. Thanks for sharing. BTW. That cover for the brassicas is a great idea.

  8. I purchased your planner and just love it. I think planning this way is going to make the process of what I am starting and then planting so much easier. The price point and quality of your planner compared to some others was great too! Can’t wait to see as your garden progresses!

  9. As I sit here watching your video on Jan. 13th I'm in awe of your weather. I live in northern Iowa and we have some drifts higher than I've ever seen them, and we have lived here 37 years. I always thought Michigan had a lot more snow. Your grass is even green yet! Love to watch your plan because my garden is impossible to get to. I just said to my husband "Why is the place I want to get to first in the Spring always under the deepest drift?!".

  10. She moved out with her husband and children and bought them a house in town. They love it. I am happy for them . Now I have a place to put my can goods

  11. Has anyone ever told you, Rachel, that you look and sound so much like Melissa Gilbert from Little House in the Prairie?
BTW, I love your garden set up and I have ordered and received your garden planner. I love it!

  12. I just got your book! We have installed a 12 bed garden this year in our HOA house! I'm excited! But man, most of my garden is tomatoes this year LOL.

  13. I just ordered your garden planner!!! Comes Tuesday!! My 15 yr old daughter is so excited to grow a garden this year. Ordered our seeds and got them last week

  14. You have struggled with your corn falling over due to high winds where you live, I think you should do what flower farmers do. Hoss sells that white trellis netting, you stretch it across the bed about 3ft off the ground using stakes. It's heavy duty and you could use it year after year to support the stalks. 😉

  15. So excited to see your garden this year! That year of Sabbath seemed to go fast but then again you had plenty of content to share with us and I enjoyed the different content. I didn't catch that you had a journal from earlier if you did share it but I just purchased one! Love that it's a 5 year journal. Excited to use it!

  16. The planning is the most fun part to me. I'm growing wheat the first time this year too! A smaller patch, just to see. Can't wait to see your garden grow!

  17. Why don’t I remember what You did that provides you more garden space??? Is it no tomatoes?? Guess I need to go back to spring and check the videos? I was excited to see chart paper in your planner….I wish we could see more of what pages are included. I use chart paper all the time for garden planning but then use a planner and notebook!! But I don’t do a lot of preserving so that part would be wasted space for me.

  18. Rachel, please mention what seeds you are starting within your weekly vlog. Please. I'm in your zone and it would be very helpful. I wasn't sure when to start artichokes, now I know it'll be this week😊
