  2. They are seedling killers. They dont break down and it dries out just by looking at them 😂

  3. I stepped on and cracked both of my plastic bottom trays while cleaning up after seed starting last year. Only got 3 years out of them 😢

Peat pots are something that seem like a good idea but in practice just arent.

  4. I use them all the time. But instead of planting the pot I peel it off and plant and transplant. I’d rather use a cut up paper towel roll or something similar. I think this year I will try soil blocking.

  5. Peat pots are silly. They're papery enough that the finest feeder roots attach to them, so that removing plants from them causes damage (a major con for seedlings vulnerable to transplant shock), but they're also solid enough that young and fine roots can't escape them if directly planted. Plastic is decent, but I'm sold on soil blocking. I used the Ladbrooke set last year, and it exceeded expectations.

  6. Concur! You will even find these at big box stores with starts; the peat pot is wrapped in plastic that has to be peeled away. The directions say – just plant the sart with the entire pot (sans plastic wrap) and you're good to go. Doesn't work. If you buy one of those – pop out the plant/soil and then put in the ground.

  7. I save toilet paper cardboard cores all winter for spring seedling starting. Fold the bottom in, fill with soil, plant seed. When putting them in the ground some of them have already deteriorated. If not open the bottom. ♻

  8. Buying GOOD quality plastic is key… alot of bad cheap plastic out there too… but peat pots are trash!

  9. Only thing I've ever had luck growing in them things are peas 🌱
I have a bunch of extra from purchases my first year gardening and haven't used them since. Maybe will grow a bunch of peas this year to get rid of em

  10. Totally agree! I tried them a couple years ago & they molded within 3 weeks on the outside. Like black moldy gunk. It was awful. Almost lost the plants, and it was a giant mess.

  11. I totally agree! They are useless. I have a bunch of them in my shed that I need to dispose of. I'm on the fence with composting them with the time it takes for them to biodegrade, and will probably end up throwing them out with the trash, or burning them.

  12. I love my waxed Dixie cups. They usually last up until I'm ready to plant them, and by that time the glue on the seam has dissolved and they open right up, perfectly every time.
I might look for some silicone ones. I feel like that would work well as a reusable. I've never seen any though

  13. They’re good for sprouts then straight to compost. I had a similar experience with peat pots. A few walls were still intact the following spring.
Seed trays and a dibber for me.

  14. I totally agree with you about the peat pots! I used them when i forat started gardening and thought i was doing something wrong. Turns out the peat pots themselves were terrible! I hope new gardeners who see this heed your warming.
