Hi everyone Jamie here welcome back to my garden I am working in the front garden this beautiful December morning and I am working on my zigzag planter so my plans for the zigzag planter are I am going to plant a beautiful blend from color blend.com a blend of daffodils

Called Bloom Factory and I’m really excited about this because I planted a daffodil blend in my front swoop in my old property last year and it was Perfection it was so beautiful the collection of blooms it was just amazing and so I’m so excited to try this other

Blend this year the bloom Factory blend is supposed to be um uh the type of daffodil bulbs that you can plant pretty close to each other so that when they when they sprout and they grow up it’s such a dense planting that all you see is the yellow and the white Bloom heads

You don’t even see any of the foliage so I’m really excited about that I’m really excited to see how it’s going to look once they start blooming probably in like February maybe early March I had planned to take everything out of these zigzag Planters and have a blank slate

That was my plan and I was going to transplant these purple fountain grass today and I came out here and I just stared at the zigzag planter and I just thought I don’t want to take these out I just think it looks so so good I was already planning on leaving the diondra

Silver Falls in because I think that that’s going to be really nice to leave in for next season but the purple fountain grass I just it just looks so good in the zigzag planter so I texted a picture to my friend a couple of my gardening friends and they agreed with

Me they said like you can’t take it out it’s just too beautiful so I think I’m going to leave it in and I’m going to plant the daffodils around the purple fountain grass which is not going to be as intense of a show but it’ll it’ll kind of work around the purple fountain

Grass and I will see how long I can leave the purple fountain grass up for um you know just for some winter interest and everything like that so um so that’s what I’m going to try today I’m going to take the rude beia out and I’m going to transplant that and I’m

Going to take the verbina out and I’m going to transplant that cuz both of those are perennials in my area so um pretty much I’m going to leave a lot of stuff in the zigzag planter and then just kind of fit the daffodils in around

It so it should be it should be kind of interesting but I just I seriously was thinking do I postpone this video do I not do it till the second week of January because we really have till the second week of January to plant uh our

Bulbs here here in my area but just with timing and I have so many bulbs I need to plant I need to start getting going on these um so I need to get them in but I’m going to work around the purple fountain grass cuz I just I can’t bring

Myself to take it out let me show you all what the zigzag planter looks like a little bit closer up before I start tearing it apart or tearing some of it apart first of all I have the three white Planters of the Pink Cashmere super beino which I love they’re not

Really blooming I have a couple blooms on this one they’re not really blooming in the cold anymore but the plants are still alive so um I think I’m just going to leave them because it’s some nice green foliage but uh I’m not totally sure what I’m going to do with them I’m

Not going to toss them I’m going to transplant them for sure but my plan for next season is I’m going to put all the Pink Cashmere in the zigzag planter in between the purple fountain fountain grass so um uh I might just take them out of the pots and put them in the

Zigzag planter in the spring I don’t know I haven’t decided yet I’m so indecisive with the zigzag planter so then a little bit closer you can see I have all these rud beia that are looking pretty good I mean I do have they could use a good Dead Heading um and I’ll

Probably do that when I transplant them and I just have to decide where I’m going to transplant them my guess is I’m just going to start putting them in the center Island um just in spots I need to map out so what what’s mapped out with

The flags already is just the Dry Creek bed but there also is going to be a p pathway coming from the side and coming across the Dry Creek bed and then there’s a bench on the other side of the Dry Creek bed so I need to map that out

So then I know where to plant all my plants but but that’s my plan right now is just to put all these things in the center Island and then of course I can move things around as needed so I do have the dondra Silver Falls that I am

Going to leave in because I love the look of this so much especially on the black cinder block the black painted cinder block block I think it softens it and I think it looks really really nice um and this this will survive our winter and um then it’ll grow even more next

Season so I would love it for it to cover like the whole thing wouldn’t that be beautiful um so I’m going to leave that and then this pink c um pink fbina let me see if I can find the tag I don’t remember the name of this one here it is it

Is I can’t read that lascar burgundy verbina it was okay it was fine it never really completely started blooming I mean honestly it’s blooming now as it’s gotten cooler than it was when it was warmer out it’s a really really pretty color but I think I’m just so used to

The super beas that are like covered with uh with blooms so maybe I won’t keep this one I don’t think I’m going to keep this one I think I’ll toss this I’ll keep the rude beia and then everything else I’m going to leave in there I do

Have some helot Trope in here that I am going to leave in because I kind of want to protect it um look at how pretty I love this stuff I kind of want to protect it and I think this is probably the warmest place that

It’s going to be for uh for the winter and then hopefully I can overwinter it and have it for next season because I love helot Trope and it’s actually really hard to get my hands on um so yeah so having said all that with all the stuff that I’m actually going to

Leave in I’m not going to have a ton of room for daffodils but I’m going to pack them so close that hopefully I will be able to fit fit all of them in and then look who came to say hi hello buddy hello are you enjoying your

Morning he’s such a good boy yes you are okay then last thing let me show you all what I have in my gorilla cart that’s ready to go all my basically all my tools for today so I have uh four five bags of these Bloom Factory each of them

Are 100 each so I have 500 of those obviously my gloves I am going to use the bulb food it’s I’ve kind of been going back and forth with fertilizer this year because I used so much compost like this is all full of compost full of compost so I don’t think the bulbs

Really need it but I’m going to put it in just in case I do have my drill and my augur this is the um twist and plant from Proven Winners and then finally I have some repel all and I’m just since we got Monty I honestly ly have not seen

Barely any squirrels around here which is amazing I don’t know if they’re just hibernating or um he’s really they smell him I’m hoping they smell him but I’m hoping that if they do come sneaking around uh that’ll that’ll push him away if they get through that they’re not

Going to like the daffodil bulbs anyway um so I’m just being a little bit extra cautious so anyway so that is it I’m going to get started cleaning everything out and then we will get planting bulbs He He Yeah all right so you can kind of see where I’m at I got all the perennials out of the zigzag planter and planted over here so I’ve got the Rudbeckia all planted in that’s looking good I even did a quick deadheading of it so they’re looking a

Little bit better right now we’ll see how they do as it gets colder um our coldest time of year is kind of right about now like uh we’re guaranteed Frost until December December 28th basically and then it starts kind of getting less and less um so it’s kind of the coldest

Time and they’re still looking okay so I think they’ll be able to to pull through with um with blooms on all winter long hopefully I don’t want to jinx myself just cuz I said that but then you all can see I couldn’t bring myself to throw

Away the rabina it just it just looked too pretty I mean it still has some color to it and I just I have all this space I just I can’t bring myself to throw away plants I can’t bring myself to to picky about plants until I get

Everything kind of planted up then once it’s planted up and it’s looking good I can kind of pick and choose like I did at my last property so anyway they um I just planted them all in right there I’ll see how they do I’ll see how they

They seem to be handling the winter fine right now and then I’ll see how they look in the spring and if I end up just not liking them then I’ll take them out here are Indian hawthorns I have three of them so one two three and they are

The Lavita Moss Indian Hawthorne from Proven Winners I’m really excited about these because Indian Hawthorne does really really really good in my area but it doesn’t bloom all the time and these are bred to bloom a lot and you can see they already have Bloom heads kind of on

Them right now so um I’ll kind of watch those they do get 4×4 4et by 4T so I planted all of these things way too close kind of on purpose cuz I’m just going to try and like Clump everything together and then as things start to

Grow in I will adjust and I will move things around um and that’s kind of the thing that I always tell people when they ask me how to start a garden just get stuff in you’re you’re going to move it you’re not going to put it in the

Right spot no matter how hard you try so just get stuff in for what you think looks good for now you can kind of kind of have the spacing in the back of your mind but you can always move it around later like my bearded iris over here I

Planted all this Bearded Iris in these raised beds over here thinking I wasn’t going to take these race beds out for a while but then I got some help around here because of this and um Isaac and Milo the two boys that are helping me out um they already took out that rais

Bed and they did a great job and they loved it was so they love demo these kids love demo I say kids they’re 19 but they love demo and so I was like well let’s let’s just start demoing the things that I wanted to come out anyway

So I had planted oh are you okay are you okay huh you funny boy you’re so funny can you knock it up come around oh you did it good boy you did it he’s just he is too funny to have around okay where was I what was I saying um I

Planted my bearded iris in there thinking that it would be a good spot for it uh and now I have to move it so I’m just going to start moving it gradually I moved three of them over to this spot right here right now obviously I’m trying not to get too distracted

Today because my point for today was to plant the bulbs in the zigzag planter and I haven’t even really started yet so just wanted to show you all this let’s get started on the bulb Planting Merry Christmas You can make it Tom My Oh Okay I am finally done 500 daffodil bulbs planted in the zigzag Planters it was I’m I’m tired I’m done I am definitely done and especially after planting all those perennials over there transplanting them I’m ready to go inside so I’m going to turn the camera around and show you all there’s not too

Much to see because basically everything is under all tucked in ready to go but again it’s the bloom Factory daffodil blend and I think it’s going to be beautiful I’m so excited to see it and those bulbs were already starting to come out of dormy I could see the little

Tips of the green coming out which is which is just so exciting to see so let me turn the camera around all right and here is the zigzag planter in all its winter Glory I think it looks pretty good I’m pretty happy with it I love the

Purple fountain grass in it I just think it looks so good and the dichondra Silver Falls I love it I’m so happy with it and so my plan is is to leave the purple fountain grass up all winter long it’s going to die off and um but it’s

Still going to have some winter interest like basically all the foliage is going to die and then um and the seeds heads the seed heads will stay here and it will still blow in the wind like that so that’ll be really pretty but one of the

Things I’m kind of worried about as I was planting the daff is timing I was worried about the timing of when the daffodils will come up and when I have to cut back the grass so grasses you can leave up all winter long and then before they start growing again

You want to cut them back to just a couple inches tall and the reason why you want to do that is once the new growth starts coming out it’s it’ll be really really hard to cut off the old growth and not cut the new growth and if

You cut the new growth you know that you’re going to see it basically all season long so you really really want to make sure that you cut your grasses back before they start growing so depending on when the daffodils come back come up I’m hoping that they I don’t have to cut

Them back until after the daffodils are done or you know what I mean I’m just I’m just I hope that the daffodils will come up when I can still leave it like that CU I think it’ll be really pretty if I do have to cut them back that’s

Okay it’s no big deal I’ll still have the pretty daffodils and maybe the daffodils will cover up the cutback uh purple fountain grass but it’ll just be really interesting to see the combination so in between each purple fountain grass is where I planted all of the bloom Factory bulbs just kind of

Mixed all in so first I tried using the augur but the compost here is just way too lofty and I was like like it was going everywhere so then I moved on to the trench method over in this area I did the trench method and basically it’s

You dig out about 6 in down of soil you lay out all your bulbs and then you cover them all up with the soil and then you dig out another trench you put all your bulbs in and then you cover it up so that was working pretty well but then

I just got kind of tired of digging the trenches so I went back to my tried and true method of planting bulbs which is just using my TR I just think it’s really easy I just put the bulbs down and use my TR dig it in about 6 in pull

The TR up and stick the bulb in and to me that sometimes is just like the simplest and the easiest way to plant bulbs now if I’m planting them out in really tough soil like this augur all the way for sure but on my last property

When I had my swoop that was pretty lofty light soil it was easy to just use my TR so that’s what that’s what I do a lot um I did decide to take out the heliotrope because it looked weird there was like only like three of them and

They weren’t you know like wasn’t even and I just thought okay this is so uniform and I I it just doesn’t look right so I took them out I put them in these pots here I watered them and um before tonight I’m going to put them in

My office under the grow lights I’ll probably cut them back and hopefully I will be able to overwinter them um until the spring and then I’ll have to like Harden them off and everything and if I lose them I lose them it’s okay I’m just so like stingy with heliotrope like I

Just want to save it all the time until garden centers start carrying more of it I’m hoping we can make it super popular again apparently heliotrope used to be really really popular and then it kind of went out of style and so I’m hoping I’m hoping all of us that love helot

Trope bring it back into Style again and uh tell all the garden centers that are demand for it so tell your garden centers you want helot Trope anyway so I am done with this 500 bulbs planted I am tired now and it is getting a little

Windy so I am ready to go inside feels good to have done this today though I feel I feel very accomplished so I hope you all enjoyed this and I hope you all have a chance to get in your garden Today

  1. Wow, you did a lot in your garden this day! Itโ€™s great to see you walking again ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป. I love heliotrope, too!

  2. Wow! The ugly duckling turned into a beautiful Swan! Thx for inspiring me and to remember no plant is set in stone, always can find another forever home.

  3. Oh Iโ€™m so happy you left the purple fountain grass! If the timing is a little off and you have to cut the grass back while the daffodils are blooming it would be cute to build little mini obelisks like you did in your olgarden and you could place it over the little grass stubble so you donโ€™t have a weird hole in the daffodils.

  4. I'm so happy you are keeping the purple fountain grass in the zig zag. The other day when you said you were going to transplant it I felt sad about it! LOL. Great decision. I love how the light comes through the plumes of the fountain grass and how it moves in the breeze. Really stunning

  5. When is Michael, going to start the renovation on your property? Just thought Iโ€™d ask, because you keep spending money on plants that will not stay there once Michael start the renovations . I think I would save my money to let him make it more beautiful than you can believe. โค๐ŸŒฒ ๐Ÿƒ๐ŸŒบ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿ˜˜ Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

  6. Love the purple fountain grass! Love that you kept it. Your house and planter are looking amazing!!! Two thoughts for you: the white pots in front of the zigzag seem too bright of a white. Seems like they might be better in black or house color. Or maybe they are not necessary there at all because the green foliage in them doesnโ€™t seem to play well with the composition. Also, maybe use a hand broom to clean the edges of the zigzag after planting and before watering. Sweeping up after myself is something Iโ€™ve had to work on over the years, but being a master gardener of a commercial property taught me the value of neatness :). So glad you are back and with the most entertaining helper.

  7. I chop the Heliotrope to 2โ€ and they grow back even better as they are now doing! Their greenery is lovely even when short. SF Bay Area z9b/Sunset 17.

  8. I no longer see the zz planter as an albatross since you painted it black AND since you planted the gazinias, verbena and the show stopper purple fountain grass! I'm in Zone 10, Ontario Calif. and love, love, love what that plant brought to my poolside flower beds! The movement when the breeze blows brings such an oceanside ambience! The dichondra grass – please keep it there as well…love how it drips down the front against the black! ZZ planter is looking pretty dramatic!

  9. Thank you Janie for everything, I'm so happy you're feeling better. I love what your planting now, I'm in a foot of snow, I Thank our lord for the moisture. Happy Holidays ๐ŸŽ„

  10. Monty is just the cutest!!!๐Ÿ˜If you want a lot of heliotrope why not grow it from seed. You have done so much to your property in the last four months than any previous owner has ever done in years!!! YOUR AMAZING!!! And so is your perseverance!!! ๐Ÿคฉ

  11. Wow! Your zig zag planter looks amazing! Looking forward to seeing the daffodils bloom. I remember when you planted the white containers with the pink cashmere verbena, lantana, and petunias at your previous home. The containers are so full, how many pink cashmere plants are planted in each?

  12. I live in Pennsylvania, and the squirrels are still active and they are all year long. So, Monte is doing a great job! So happy for your recovery, you are so positive, it's contagious! Merry Christmas!

  13. Glade to see you doing some gardening in your garden and getting back into shape. Puppies are the cutest! Grasses are so graceful in the garden.
