What’s grown on gardeners on today’s 2-minute Garden tip I’m going to show you my favorite kitchen scraps to compost that we actually do compost almost every single week so let’s make our way over to our homemade trash can composter and then I’m going to compost all of the kitchen scraps that I

Collected over the last week so the first thing that you’ll notice in here are eggshells we love saving the dried eggshells so when we apply this we like to uh basically take our hands and just crunch them up because obviously in whole form they are going to be way too

Large and they take forever to compost as is then we have coffee grounds coffee grounds are an excellent source of nitrogen we drink iced coffee every single day so these are the natural coffee grounds just make sure that what you use is all natural coffee not artificially flavored coffee then we

Have the remnants of garden scrap so here I have some uh some leak leaves and some broccoli stalks that we didn’t need uh then there’s also also some kale leaves in here so all of that is going to go into the trash can we also have some remnants of some carrots those are

Great to compost and then I use a lot of herbs in my cooking so here we have some oregano stems I think there’s also some cilantro stems in here as well because we love that here’s some leftover green onion tops you can see right here that’s

All going to go in there uh we have the core of an apple that goes in there and I’ll tell you what isn’t in here oh here’s some celery what isn’t in here are banana peels usually we eat a few bananas every single week uh but this

Week I guess isn’t off week for the banana peels but that what you see right there are some of my absolute favorite things to compost every single week now when it comes to composting kitchen scraps the truth is the list is absolutely enormous of what you can

Compost you really only want to avoid a few certain things really the only thing we don’t compost are number one things that are full of seeds because we don’t want the seeds to germinate in our cold compost pile and number two the category of night Shad so that includes potatoes

Tomatoes eggplant and peppers because they tend to hold a lot of diseases and since we’re cold composting that process will not likely kill those diseases the real no NOS with composting comes when you try to compost processed foods if you’re going to compost coffee grounds make sure that you only compost natural

Coffee grounds if you drink flavored coffee or if your coffee bag says artificially flavored on that don’t compost that we also don’t like composting animal products eggshells are the one exception that we’re willing to compost but we don’t compost meat we don’t compost bones we don’t compost shrimp shells things like that because

That can attract other animals to dig in your compost and it can also Harbor diseases when you turn your compost so we try to avoid that also you don’t want to compost anything like pet manure please don’t compost pet waste and finally never compost finished meals so don’t compost your lasagna your pizza

Don’t compost anything that contains oils or refined sugar or things like that we only want to compost Whole Foods and raw materials for the most part the list of what you can compost is absolutely ginormous it’s the list of what you shouldn’t compost that really is important and that’s today’s 2minute

  2. Oh well. I filled up my new trash can composter with, among other things, the remnants of my tomato plants that I cut down just before last week's freeze.

  3. Pet waste is OK IF it’s rabbit or Guinea pig waste. They are vegetarian and their waste is a fantastic compost and soil amendment.

  4. I boil eggs shells then put them into a blender. They turn to dust and I throw them straight into my garden. Don’t waste anything if you can help it. It’s all free compost after all. 😁
