I Covered My Veggies During Cold Weather And This Happened!

On today’s 2 minute garden tip, I show you what happened when I covered my cold hardy winter vegetables during a cold snap. Many gardeners fail to cover cold hardy vegetables in cold weather, but is it worth the effort? Are winter crops truly cold tolerant? In this video, I covered my veggies during cold weather and this happened!

While it is true that there are many frost tolerant vegetables that gardeners can grow in winter, not all cold hardy crops are created equal. There is more to cold tolerance than the lowest temperature reached. Whether a plant sustains cold damage depends on the temperatures reached, the duration spent at that temperature, total time below freezing, whether the plants endure repeated freezes or if they have a warm spell in between to recover, etc. This video shows the value of covering plants to keep frost off the surface.

What’s growing on gardeners on today’s 2-minute Garden tip we answer the question what happens when you protect cold hearty winter veggies from a hard freeze let’s go find out together I’ve been growing a cold hearty variety of lettuce in my garden called Marvel of Four Seasons for years now it tends to

Do very well in my zone 8B Winters and it is a very prolific and delicious variety well I grew some last spring and in the summer some of the heads bolted and went to seed and I allowed them to Reed the beds so I could get some free

Seedlings growing this winter my plan worked perfectly I have multiple beds that are growing seedlings of Marvel of Four Seasons which is an heirloom type and grows true in this bed right here the Marvel of Four Seasons heads receded earlier so I have a head that is growing

That is much older than the varieties in my other bed now we haven’t gotten very cold this winter we’ve only gotten down to 27° Farenheit as my low so far but we had a string of nights where we were back to back to back with upper 20s and

That caused a little bit of cold damage because of the prolonged cold temperatures and this is the head of Marvel of Four Seasons because this germinated early it got a pretty good size on it and got fairly mature before the cold weather came now I never protected this head because it was

Pretty large and far along and despite several nights in the upper 20s and no protection it took absolutely no damage and looks perfect in this rais bed right here I had numerous Marvel of Four Seasons heads come up for me but they weren’t nearly as far along and they

Also went unprotected Ed throughout the cold despite them being a lot smaller The Only Exception was a head that I have under here I had one spare milk jug left over from a distilled water container that I dropped on top of one head just to see if that would make a

Big difference to their growth rate and this is what I found these much smaller heads of Marvel of Four Seasons got decimated by the cold temperatures and for all intents and purposes they are pretty much dead but how did this Marvel of Four Seasons head of lettuce fair

That I covered with a milk jug wow wow look at that it is basically looking beautiful pretty perfect and that right there is going to be ready for Harvest fairly soon this should prove to you beyond a shadow of a doubt that protecting even your cold hearty greens

Can be very beneficial especially when they are young and not well established yet there are many ways that you can protect your winter veggies from cold anything you can do to keep the hard frosts off your veggies will go miles to helping their cold Sensitivity I recommend building one of these hoop

Structures if you have a raised bed or an earth garden and also you can alternatively use these milk jug green houses I will link the tutorials down in the video description that shows you all of my different cold protection methods and that’s today’s 2minute Garden tip if you’re new to the Channel please

  1. Hi, will clear containers work as well as the frosted looking ones that you use? I have a lot of 1 gallon tea jugs that are completely see-through. Thanks

  2. I've been doing this with milk jugs for years and can confirm its effectiveness. But dont forget to save the bottoms. The work well as water trays for 6 and 4 cell seed trays and smaller pots.

  3. Thanks for all the info you have shared. I have learned – and been reminded – of lots of tips & tricks for my garden. Zone 8 / Alabama.

  4. Why didn't I follow your excellent advice… I just landed from a trip to Texas to see my family only to find my garden in SoCal received a decimating series of frosty nights. I'm really glad I pruned down the peppers, but I'm having to harvest all the green beefsteak tomatoes if I hope to have anything not brassica. Even the scarlet salvia suffered… time to supplement the hummingbirds. 😮
