Low maintenance garden + family friendly garden design ideas šŸŒ± Garden Tour – Behind the Garden Gate

Step into a low maintenance garden with family friendly garden design ideas in Anglesea, Victoria, where relaxation meets coastal charm. This thoughtfully designed garden, crafted by Ocean Road Landscaping in 2018, seamlessly blends practicality and aesthetics into its garden design. A crushed rock driveway, bordered by clumping grasses and shrubs in muted greens, greys, and silvers, captures the essence of the surrounding coastal dune environment and the laidback lifestyle of gardening in Australia. This garden is the answer to the need for a casual and easy going garden space that’s low maintenance & perfect for a large family gathering.

The entrance pergola, adorned with ornamental grapevines, beckons you to explore the backyard. Tackling stormwater challenges, a brilliantly managed system ensures not only the prevention of runoff issues but also the flourishing of lush plantings and a vibrant lawn. At the heart of the backyard stands a magnificent stone wall, a striking focal point that invites gatherings around a potential fire pit. The grasses, mirroring coastal hues, create a perfect harmony, reminiscent of sandy beaches and coastal cliffs.

As you move through this low maintenance garden, casuarinas and banksias along the back border promise future privacy, while the seamless integration with the adjacent space blurs the boundaries, expanding the visual expanse. Explore a charming picking garden adorned with passionfruit and citrus trees. A touch of whimsy comes to play with a quirky clothesline, ingeniously tensioned rocks – adding an artistic flair to the outdoor space.

On the surfs entrance side of the house is an outdoor shower & surfers storage space, catering to the owners active lifestyle. A bright green fernery offers a soft contrast to the hardy banksias opposite them.

With its repeating palette and quirky features, this garden becomes a relaxing garden retreat for the entire family. If you found this tour inspiring, don’t forget to like and subscribe for more and let me know in the comments which was your favourite part of this garden.

This garden is a low maintenance familyĀ  retreat designed to gather and relax in.Ā Ā  I’m Chloe from Bean there Dug ThatĀ  let’s go behind the garden gate. Welcome to Anglesea, Victoria at the start of theĀ  Great Ocean Road this area is loved by surfers andĀ Ā

Holiday makers and when all the family are hereĀ  at this property you can imagine that there’s aĀ Ā  large number of cars and so this front yard spaceĀ  has to accommodate them without looking like a car park. The practical crushed rock surface isĀ  a much nicer version of a driveway there’sĀ Ā

No harsh and straight lines that you’d getĀ  from concrete or bitumen here and becauseĀ Ā  the gravelled space extends both towards theĀ  house and right to the edge of the road theĀ Ā  garden space here feels a lot larger than itĀ  really is and and then we’ve got the plantingsĀ Ā

And the curved edges of the gardens whichĀ  soften everything and bring it all together. To emulate the surrounding coastal duneĀ  environment this garden is really heavyĀ Ā  on the clumping grasses and then the shrubs are aĀ Ā  mix of muted greens greys and silvers toĀ  further complement that coastal design.

I love this statement but still very casualĀ  entrance pergola inviting you to exploreĀ Ā  the backyard even further this pergola isĀ  flanked with ornamental grapevines whichĀ Ā  when they grow up and over will createĀ  a green tunnel inviting you to explore

Further. This garden was designed and builtĀ  back in 2018 by the team from Ocean RoadĀ Ā  Landscaping – now like all gardens there isĀ  always some sort of a challenge on the siteĀ Ā  and here the crew had to deal with a problemĀ  with storm water drainage and the problemĀ Ā

Was that there was absolutely no managementĀ  of the storm water situation from the houseĀ Ā  and when the house was extended it createdĀ  even more storm water runoff so the solutionĀ Ā  that they’ve come up with solves the problemĀ  and allows plants and a lawn to thrive and

Flourish. Wow what a big beautifulĀ  open space it’s perfect to gatherĀ Ā  and relax in now you wouldn’t know it fromĀ  looking but along this side of the gardenĀ Ā  is the storm water management system soĀ  that the water is now managed containedĀ Ā  and collected instead of turningĀ  this whole area into a muddy mess.

This giant stone wall really is the focusĀ  of the backyard and I can see why becauseĀ Ā  it would draw people out here I can seeĀ  this packed with people sitting aroundĀ Ā  a roaring fire having a great time thisĀ  stone wall took 3 weeks to build but IĀ Ā

Think you’ll agree that it’s worth it it makesĀ  a statement it’s practical and it’s beautiful, I really love how these grasses mimicĀ  the colours in the wall but also remindĀ Ā  me of the sand and the beach andĀ  the coastal cliffs in this area.

The casuarinas and the banksias on this backĀ  border will eventually grow up and offer someĀ Ā  privacy from the neighbours and we talk aboutĀ  borrowed landscape being used a lot in gardenĀ Ā  design to help make a garden feel biggerĀ  and blur the boundaries well here becauseĀ Ā

The garden behind was actually designedĀ  by the same crew the lines are even moreĀ Ā  blurred the plantings and the style matchĀ  this space so there’s almost no need for a boundary! Over here is a little pickingĀ  garden space with a passion fruit growingĀ Ā

Up the side of the shed a few citrusĀ  trees and a cute little picking garden as well from here you can really see howĀ  the silvery plants tie in nicely withĀ Ā  the colour of the house for a soft beachyĀ  sort of a vibe. There is still more of thisĀ Ā

Garden to explore down the sideĀ  here I’ve spotted a very quirky clothesline how clever is this it almost looksĀ  like an art installation more than a clotheslineĀ Ā  the wire is tensioned using these rocks whichĀ  actually match the rocks in the wall that we’veĀ Ā

Already seen really clever don’t hide yourĀ  clothes lines away make a feature of it! With an outdoor shower this clearly isĀ  the surf’s entrance side of the house thisĀ Ā  fernery here is a nice juxtaposition betweenĀ  the hardy banksia on this side and when youĀ Ā

Enter the house you’re greeted by these fernsĀ  which you can see through a glass wall behind them. It’s pretty clear they love surfing whenĀ  they’ve got a dedicated surfers dump space – hereĀ Ā  you can take off your wet suit, take your bootiesĀ  off and in this clever cupboard you can stand upĀ Ā

Your surfboards for storage this door slidesĀ  along the track to reveal the storage space. I can really see why the owners love thisĀ  garden as a space to relax and wind in withĀ Ā  its repeating planting pallette andĀ  quirky features it really is a spaceĀ Ā

That you can just sit down and chill in ifĀ  you’ve liked this garden don’t forget toĀ Ā  like and subscribe because I’ve got plenty moreĀ  garden tours coming your way see you next time!

  1. love the coastal vibes with the crushed gravel and untreated timber. Does anyone know what sort of crushed gravel that is? I have crushed limestone at home, but it's far more sandy and tracks everywhere.

  2. Iā€™m in awe of this garden! I only live 20 minutes away but itā€™s worlds apart from mineā€¦I wish! Another beautiful representation of our great landscape and full credit for the external home renovation too. Seriously you should have your own tv show, well done.
