Gary Pilarchik: Basic Tomato Staking 101 & Thinning Out Central Tomato Leaves: Air Flow! – TRG 2014

Tomato are staked to prevent disease and insect damage. You don’t have to stake a tomato but it makes the plant easy to manage, especially when spraying. There is no special way to stake a tomato. Just make sure the ties are loose and the post will hold a mature plant. Thinning the center leaves out of your tomato plant will help with disease management. The key is not to over expose the fruit to the sun. Leave the leaves above the fruits for shade.
