  1. Great info! I mostly grow in the ground right now, but have enjoyed growing with them in the last. I may give them another shot now!

  2. Good tips, especially the one about making the raised bed 4’ or less. I have a friend who had one 6’x 6’ and he was always trying to balance getting in and out so he didn’t step on his plants.

  3. Hi Kim. Between two of my 4×8 raised beds is an eight foot long cattle panel tunnel trellis. I reserve one foot from each raised bed, closest to the tunnel for growing vining plants. The back half is for cucumbers on both sides, and in the front are shelling peas, and pole beans, each on their own side. Harvesting the cucumbers, beans, and pea pods is easily done from inside the tunnel, and it makes a great place to escape the summer heat. From my experience, arm's reach is about 30 inches, so I plant the rest of the raised beds keeping within that distance. That way I don't have to step onto the soil and compact it. Today I sowed seeds in three of my raised beds, Malaga Radish, German Giant Radish, Golden Detroit Beets, Green Mammoth snow peas, Arrow Peas, assorted lettuces, Danvers carrots, and Imperator carrots. Tomorrow I'll sow seeds for peppermint in a pot. I've also been working on emptying out 20 gallon grow bags, moving 10 gallon grow bags, and filling my newest raised beds. On my to do list, is potting up about 140 pepper seedlings. Potato planting is two weeks away, so I have to get a 3×6 raised bed set up for that. The hardware cloth I ordered for it came in the mail today. While I was down in my orchard watering the trees, I saw leaf sprouts starting to bud out on two of my cherry trees, the Lapins and Stella. In the next few days, I need to fertilize my cherry trees. I'm sure the Bing cherry tree will start sprouting any day. I'm starting to think that I may have over done my garden a little bit this year, and I still need to set up two GreenStalk towers. The third one is full of strawberry plants. And I need to put down straw for my mushroom bed—Wine Caps, and start sowing seeds in my herb garden. So much to do, and so little time…
