I've been getting worried I planted to late mine have just barely started to come up here in north Missouri. I was thinking the brutal part of winter killed them before they got started. I don't have a good stand yet tho so I'm still a little worried
Hi there we live in mi and recently moved to a new homestead and left the garlic we planted in the fall behind. Is there a way to plant any garlic or shallots right now at our new homestead?
Zone 4 Canada. I planted my garlic early October, then covered it with a good layer of chopped straw mid November. The snow has melted but no leaves poking through the straw yet.
Planted mine in late January, it's way taller than 5 inches but I am in Phoenix so hopefully everything is still good with them
Do we fertilize our garlic now???
Its weird here. Garlic & onions are evergreen here. Ive had my onions bloom in January with snow over them. They do fine. If we have an extended cold snap. Ill get some leaf damage & prune it back a little. But all my onions & garlic keep their leaves over winter. They don't die back.
My garlic is like a good foot tall but I wasn’t worried at all until I saw this. So far it hasn’t really been cold enough to damage them much. I wonder why mine are growing so much more than yours when I’m in the same climate and I didn’t even plant mine until like December
My garlic all died in winter 😢
I'm in Ohio and I think I planted my garlic too early. I have almost a foot of green growth. I used dry leaves to cover over the winter. They look great so far. I may just wait and see what happens. Thanks for the tips!
I started mine in October and one of my varieties is taking off like a rocket. It's probably 8 or more inches tall and it's gotten down to 26 a few times the last week with no issues. My least cold hardy variety just started popping up about a week ago so they are still small. They'll all be fine.
Thanks Luke for always taking time out to help us out with our gardens
Mines about 2 foot tall (zone9b) already but growing nicely in this warmer wetter winter we had. Huge bulbs I hope😅
When would you guys start garlic seeds?
I saw a squirrel 🐿. Love the garlic 🧄
Last year was my first time to try growing garlic. I didn't really know how, but I did anyway😂 My cloves came late in October. I planted as soon as I could. A few days later, we were dropped into -5 to -10° temps, so I grabbed an empty "clear" Rubbermaid tote and turned it upside down over the newly planted garlic. It wasn't big enough to cover all of them, but most. I never thought anything about how soon they sprouted, I was just happy I had saved them! They did very well. I planted a whole lot more this time!
Ours are volunteers or something. I guess we didn't dig everything up🤷 They're pretty tall. We're zone 8. Nights are 20-50 & days are 30-70.
I have a nice landrace hardneck garlic that came from my grandma’s garden, where it grew prolifically as a volunteer for decades and was rarely disturbed or harvested.
I live in Oklahoma, and it grows slowly but continually throughout the winter, and shows no signs of damage until temps reach 15 degrees or so. A couple months ago, we hit -2 degrees, and the garlic was briefly killed to the ground level, but had 6 inches of new leaf growth within two weeks of warming up. I almost never water or feed it, and last year I got about 15 lbs of garlic from very minimal effort. I usually let a few go to “seed” and plant the resulting bulbils in the fall. It’s a great way to produce hundreds of plants as well as revitalizing the garlic strain, even if you end up with a few heads that are a bit smaller than they would otherwise be.
Garlic is amazingly hardy.
Fully watched. Class Luke. 😊
Was getting worried as my garlic loved the past weeks warm weather and next week the nights will be in low 20’s and one night 18.
I'm new to growing garlic. I just bought a bag of "classic" garlic from my local tractor supply store. I live in Northeast Indiana, can I plant this now and have a harvest this year or did I make a mistake by buying now and can't plant until fall? Please help
Our garlic here in Oklahoma is already a good 7-8in above the mulch. Our last average frost is early April, and so far there are no temps lower than 38 on the 10-day forecast. Fingers crossed we are good to go!
I would love feedback on what you do to prevent those squirrels from digging up your garlic if they are not under a potato sack or cover?
I planted mine in November I have elephant garlic German Hardy Korean garlic chesno red hard necks. A few of sprouted it's 50° here in Wisconsin and it was upwards of 60 to 63 ° about 3 days last week. I have about 50 cloves planted I'm going to have a ton.
Weird spring, today for the first time I looked into the milk jug greenhouses and saw cabbage sprouts, broccoli sprouts, and poppy sprouts.
Good vid
Is it to early to take it out of the ground?
Thanks Luke. This is my first year growing garlic..
I have Music, Elephant garlic and French Grey shallots sprouting in Zone 6 Idaho.
My garlic is already two feet tall. 🤣 I planted 4 weeks before my first frost date, but the weather at the end of October was super hot, and we didn't get frost until late December. A few mild frosts and some snow in January, but then the weather started warming up again to the high 60s all through February and into March, even though my official last frost date is around mid April. I'm just embracing the growth because there's literally nothing else I can do! 🤣
