Using Fertilizer Like This Is A Big WASTE Of Money!

On today’s 2 minute garden tip, I share why you should not fertilize garden beds that are empty. Amending garden soil in advance of planting is important, but do this with compost only. Do not waste expensive fertilizer products weeks in advance of planting, because using fertilizer like this is a big waste of money!

  1. This is such an important tip. I put manure, worm castings and rock phosphorus in my container garden. Your video makes sense. Live and learn. I love your channel. You have really helped me over the years. Thank you so much!

  2. Excellent tip! Im sure this helped a lot of people. Just came in from watering my tomato plants. Spring is here, and Im lovin playing in the dirt.

  3. What about slow release amendments like bone meal, alfalfa pellets, compressed hen manure pellets. Omg I just did this and not planting out in my zone 5 for another 4 wks🤦🏻‍♀️. 💸💸💸

  4. I know this is off topic, but will you be attaching pvc to place the shade cloth over your new metal raised beds? This is going to be my 1st summer with my metal beds and I'm trying to plan out my shade situation.

  5. The only thing i do is put compost and shredded leaves on my beds in the winter for bed and again in early march. I use leaves for mulch and i do use bone meal in individual holes when i plant. Thanks for this info.

  6. Would agree that it would be a big WASTE of Money to use synthetic fertilizers that way. However, it takes several weeks to months, depending on climate and soil moisture levels for regular (non-fermented) organic fertilizer to be broken down and accessible to plants by the soil biology. The more moisture, the better. Prepping your beds or containers that way (ahead of time) would make the nutrients available to your plants by the time you plant them.

  7. Fertilizer is expensive. But, do you know what's cheap and almost free? Making your own from leaf mould, rain/well water and fresh fish scraps. It's called fish emulsion. Start it in the fall or winter in a bucket and it'll be ready to use come springtime.

  8. Great advice. I was doing it wrong. This video explained what to do very well. I'm a second year gardener.

  9. So should i till in the 3" compost layer? last year was the first year of using my back yard, which has a lot of red clay, but i tilled in about 3" of compost then.

  10. MG is the spiritual successor to the great Mel Bartholomew in his manner of teaching and conveying his enthusiasm for gardening.

  11. Thank you. I have around 50(20 and 10 gal) fabric pots that I filled last year with 4 yards of new potting soil. Tomatoes, peppers, squash, beans, eggplant. I'm wondering how best to refresh the soil for this years grow? Replace some of the old in each pot with fresh compost and fertilizer(tomato tone)? I also have an inline fertilizer system for drip irrigation(master blend once a week). Is this overkill? Wondering what folks may do in my situation before ordering a bunch of fertilizer and compost. Thanks!

  12. Sounds right to me. 87 degrees here already. I bought some of your purple asparagus and within 3 weeks some are 2 feet tall and have tiny spears on them. Unbelieveable. Great tip on those too.
