[Music]
hey everyone welcome back to my channel
it’s Robin Jeffrey and we’re going to be
going over my 2024 Garden plan I’m
excited to share with you what we’re
going to be planting indoors what we’re
going to be direct sewing here going
over our garden beds what is going where
and also the new garden beds we’re going
to be building along the back of our
yard for some really awesome trailer
systems let’s jump in okay so here’s our
garden layout for this year we created
this with Farmers Almanac so I will
leave the link down below for this but
as you can see it is really nicely laid
out and it takes according to your
measurements how much you can plant of
each item I’m going to be showing
showing you the beds in the garden and
where everything goes we are filming at
midday right now so it’s very bright out
so I hope that it’s not blinding in the
footage but we’ll start with the two
front beds and what we’re planting there
okay so these are our front two beds
over here what we were going to do in
this bed was turnips two different types
of lettuce and peppers but we’ve kind of
changed things up a bit because we have
bought green stocks so we have two green
stocks we’re going to be using and one
we’re going to be using for salid and
for lead so this bed right here will
probably just be filled with different
types of peppers and turnips and then
we’re going to find something else to
add in the middle last year we planted
potatoes in this bed and last year we
did broccoli and cabbage and beans in
this bed and they thrived so we’re going
to be switching out to potatoes this
year and we’re going to fill this whole
bed with potatoes so we have two
vertical beds running this way and then
a square bed in the middle this bed over
here is filled with asparagus so we have
four asparagus plants over here and and
this is going to be year three for them
we bought them in year 2 so obviously I
need to come in and take care of them a
little bit but these are going to come
back beautifully and we should be able
to harvest some finger sized asparagus
this year okay it’s so hot that I had to
take my coat off which I’m not
complaining about growing up in South
Africa I’m all for the heat in this bed
behind me I’m pretty sure I just said
we’re doing radish in this front bed
we’re not it’s turnup so in this bed
behind me we have corn and then beets
and then radit last year we did peppers
and we did carrots and we did beet all
of them did amazing we got really good
Peppers but we’re switching our Peppers
to bell peppers so I’ll show you the
seed packets later because I have all of
the seeds that were starting indoors I
have laid out indoors and I only brought
the directo seeds outside to show you so
we’ll be going inside later to show you
our seed starting setup which we’re so
excited about we’re using bootstrap
farmer this year okay so this bed behind
me here is out at the vertical bed and
we’re doing brussel sprouts for the
first time and we’re doing watermelon we
grew a watermelon last year but I pulled
it out like I thought it wasn’t growing
and I didn’t follow the connection and
there was actually a watermelon growing
in amongst our tomatoes so I know it’s
going to grow wonderful instead of
planting one large watermelon we
actually bought like mini watermelon
seeds not mini seeds mini watermelons
and they’re yellow inside so I’m really
excited about those okay so behind me
are our two back beds and as you can see
they have trell systems on last year we
did a ton of tomatoes over here we did
five roma tomato plants I still have all
the tomatoes in the freezer and we’re
going to be making some tomato sauce
with them before the summer cuz we can’t
roll into another season till we use up
that produce that’s in the freezer and
on the far bed in the back we did
cucumbers which turned out so good this
year we are planting pickling cucumbers
which is really important because I
didn’t know last year that there were so
many different varieties and so we
planted sometimes the wrong thing
according to what we wanted to can and
preserve so we’re doing two types of
cucumbers this year so in this bed
behind me we are going to do cabbage and
broccoli I have to keep referencing my
chart because I’m going to forget where
we have planned things so we’re doing
cabbage and broccoli we had a problem
last year without our cabbage and so I’m
praying that doesn’t happen this year if
you’ve had this before we had like worm
eggs in the outer leaves of the Cabbage
I didn’t know if it would be safe to
harvest and eat like could you just
remove the outer leaves of the cabbage
and the inside be fine if you’ve had
that problem before and you successfully
removed leaves and everything was fine
let me know but yeah cabbage and
broccoli our broccoli did really good
last year like the plants were huge but
we only set up this Garden at the end of
May and so we got the broccoli out too
late in the season and because of the
hot weather which broccoli doesn’t like
hot weather the heads of broccoli were
just like the size of my fist really
tiny so we’re hoping for lots of big
broccoli this year okay so in this bed
we’re actually removing the trell system
in both of these I forgot to mention
that and we’re doing onions and carrots
we did so good with the onions we got
last year we bought onion sets from
McKenzie which we’re doing again this
year they don’t ship out till April um
and so we’re going to do carrots and
onion back here and we’re going to be
removing these trell systems we’re going
to be setting up new tra systems behind
which I’m going to show you now okay so
this is what runs at the back of our
yard behind all of our garden beds
there’s my shadow and it’s
basically a new space Zoe what you doing
you taking so we are going to be turning
this into usable space to garden with so
all of our garden beds we get from rais
garden beds. CA I’m going to link them
down below their beds are the honest
best quality there’s no rough Edge like
a lot of raised garden beds will be very
um sharp along the edges or they come
with like a rubber that you have to put
all around to you know protect kids from
the sharp edges or protect yourself
these ones are professionally done they
have already rolled over the edges it’s
not sharp at all these are the the
garden beds as you can see they’re not
sharp at all they’ve already done the
job of taking that sharpness away and
doing an edging on the beds this is
created by professional steel company
and so I’m going to leave their link
down below if you are in Canada I highly
recommend these beds completely solid
they have reinforcement within the soil
this is our second year with them as you
can see they went through a whole winter
and they haven’t lost any of their shape
a lot of beds over time will lose their
shape these have not
highly recommend this company I will
link it down below so we’re going to be
getting some more beds from rais garden
beds. C and we’re going to run them
right at the back here and we’re going
to use our back wall as our Traer system
so along our back wall here we’re going
to be running all of our Tomatoes our
cucumbers our table cucumbers our
pickling cucumbers our whole beans we’re
going to be running that all along here
this is going to be a really good use of
space and I’m really excited for it to
just not be a MC mud pit and for
actually have far home because I’ve
realized that you can really produce a
lot within a small space and you don’t
need a huge massive Homestead if you
have a backyard you can grow any food
you want okay so back behind me in this
corner here we’re going to be doing a
mini deck and putting our Greenhouse
slash a shed back here and that’s going
to be just a place where I can store all
of the gardening stuff because right now
it’s in the garage and to get to that is
a bit of a bit of a tour so we’re going
to try and keep everything we need back
here but that is the outside garden tour
now we’re going to to go inside I’m
going to show you our bootstrap farmer
setup and the seeds that we’re going to
be sewing inside oh before I do that let
me show you the seeds that we’re going
to be direct sewing outside these seeds
do not need to be started indoors they
are hearty as soon as that last frost is
gone they go in the
ground so here are all the seeds that we
can direct plant and they do not need to
be sewing indoors we have our pole beans
for right at the back we have our corn
our turnips
our carrots our radish and our beets
these are all going to be sewing outside
after the last frost and I will show you
inside what we are going to be starting
from seed what needs a little bit more
tender and Care these ones are a hearty
guys they are hardcore they do not need
to be so inside these are the 1020 trays
with a bunch of six cells and yes it
looks like a lot but I’m going to show
you what we’re going to be planting in
each tray and then we’ll go from there
so Tyson actually built this whole shelf
this weekend which I think worked out so
good he has all the best ideas and so we
just have brackets and I believe it was
a 10t shelf and then he put the corner
piece on which is really helpful to have
this little area over here where I can
have you know my sticks a marker and a
bunch of labeling stuff over here so I
love the color of the bootstrap farmer
trays they come in so many colors you
can pop onto their website we ordered
from indoor farmer.com CA and we have
had the best experiences with indoor
farmer I’m going to link them down below
if you are in Canada please pop on to
their website if you’re looking for all
of your gardening stuff your
homesteading stuff go and give them a
look and see what they have to offer so
as you can see all of our seeds are from
West Coast Seeds besides a few that we
picked up in store from McKenzie we love
West Coast Seeds and we used them last
year with amazing germination rates so
we’re excited to be using them again
today I’m putting together my herb order
from West Coast Seeds which is going to
go in this tray over here and we’re
going to be planting all of our herbs in
our green stocks so I’m excited to share
that with you once we get the green
stocks all set up over here we have our
tomato section so we have sungolds which
I’m excited to be trying we have super
sweets which are apparently some of the
best little tomatoes and Sweet Million
which is another cherry tomato we
basically just want to start trying a
whole bunch of tomatoes because we love
tomatoes so we have two packs of sun
gold because I believe they’re there
were only 12 seeds in a bag and so we
got two
bags we have our arish paste which we
are going to be using to make our tomato
sauces this year over here we have our
Peppers so I’m really excited for these
these are like mini bell peppers called
Hungarian cheese
blend we have some hot peppers as well
because Tyson would like to get into
that whole world so I’m excited for him
to be trying that out this was in store
from TV Mark over here on our green tray
we have our
broccoli and it’s the Centennial
broccoli we have our cariflex cabbage
which is a pointed cabbage so I’m
excited to try that we haven’t done this
one
before this is our Tiara coated
cabbage for cucumbers we are doing the
tasty Emperor and these are like table
salad cucumbers and then for pickles
we’re going to be doing this one which
is homemade pickles if you’re ever
curious about which one we ordered and
you want to search on their website just
type in the codes or screenshot what I’m
showing you on the page and you’ll be
able to find it these are flowers that
the kids picked up that they want to
grow this
year I’ll show you what they picked out
and we have some more somewhere around
the house which I have to go locate here
are the Watermelons I was telling you
about these are from mckenzi so these
are McKenzie petite yellow watermelons
and then from West Coast we have the
these Brussels sprout so we did a order
from West Coast and from McKenzie and so
we’re excited to see how all of these
germinate so our lights are Jiffy hydro
and we got five of them to go with each
tray so we did not get the humidity
domes to go with these but we did get a
heat mat for our Tomatoes what I am
going to do for the humidity domes
because you only really need it on for
like the first week of when you’re
trying to germinate them is I’m going to
be labeling all the plants and so what
I’ll probably do is just throw some
cling wrap like slly over to create a
humid space okay so this is everything
we’re going to be growing like I said
the trays are from bootstrap farmer we
got it from indoor pharma.com
plant all of our seeds in our little six
cells and then this is a bottom water
feeder which is really handy when you’re
doing seedlings because watering
seedlings is such such a catch 22
because you can really damage The Little
Seedling plants or you can upset the
actual seeds that you’ve planned to
below the soil so you just add your
water to the bottom of your 1020 tray
and it Waters up from the roots instead
of from top down you’re doing bottom up
So within your 1020 tray you can fit 2 4
6 8 10 12 sixels so bootstrap farmer
sells multiple different sizes this is
the six cell it is their smaller size
and then they also have a four cell they
have the 3-in up putting and 5 in up
potting and so we actually went ahead
and got the 3in okay so like I said
these are your six cells and it fits 12
six cells and we decided to get the 3in
pots for when we up pot so I’m going to
show you that set up very simple we
going to take these
out so this pops on new 1020 tray and
now this is the handiest thing last year
I fully remember trying to take my
seedling plants outside to get sunlight
and it was a complete balance Act of not
getting them to fall over because I used
the cor pots and they were like
individual on a baking tray and it was
just chaos this year we’re doing it
different we’re doing it right we’re
going to take our 3in pots which as you
can see are bigger and we’re going to
pop them in a beautiful grid system and
I’m going to show you how they do not
fall out here it is with our 3in pots
that we’re going to up part two once our
seedlings are growing out of our six
cells so we got 3 6 9 12 15 18 the
reason we ended up with this many trays
is because we need this many 3-in pots
for when our seedlings are bigger so
when you are carrying your plants
outside to give them that
sunlight like how vertical can we get it
oh we’re falling they’re not coming out
this is an amazing setup you guys so
[Music]
we’re okay so we’re starting seeds I am
so excited to finally be getting our
seed tray started I’ve been itching to
get my hands in the soil for so long now
so super pumped I have definitely bought
way too many seeds for our small Garden
I have two green stocks which we’re also
going to fill so I don’t know I might
have to get some grow bags along the way
because I definitely think I’m starting
way too many seeds but I’m just so
excited so we bought bootstrap farmer
10x 20 trays with a su Sals like I
talked about earlier and we got it from
indoor farmer. CA like I mentioned we’re
so excited about this and it honestly
has made seeds starting so much easier
than last year the cells are working
really well we even did our herbs today
so we’re flying with our seeds starting
and we should have it all done by the
start of this week when you guys are
seeing this video our seeds should all
be growing and we should be having them
outside in the next you know 6 to 8
weeks I feel like we’re going to get an
earlier warm season like maybe our last
frost date is not going to be as late um
but we we’re just going to see we’ve got
all our heat mats and our lamps and so
we got everything we need to make the
seed starting good go smoothly we’re
starting with our sun gold Tomatoes we
got our seeds from West Coast we ordered
most of them online but we did go into
py Mar and we picked up a few more West
Coast Seeds from their herb section and
we did get a few McKenzie seeds which I
showed you all
earlier so for the seed cells I’m
actually doing two to three seeds per
cell this allows there to be wiggle room
in case one of the seeds doesn’t
germinate and then when you go and thin
them out you can thin out the ones that
are not as strong and keep the strongest
plants so the give is about 2 to three
per sale if you’re working with bigger
larger Seas you could maybe less than
that to 1 to two um but I like to do two
to three I honestly have even done up to
four that way once you see the plants
coming through you can pick the
strongest plants to keep so I did two
trays of sun gold probably too much but
you know what I have friends and family
that we could possibly give these to or
I could sell them on Facebook
Marketplace if that’s a thing I don’t
know if it is is so yeah these bootstrap
Farmers trays are doing so well and they
are very sturdy I like that the system
is the bottom watering I prefer that to
the top watering I do still have my
spray bottle which I’ve been doing on
the surface but ever so lightly and
watering from the bottom just doesn’t
disturb that top soil at all so we’re
putting the name tags on labeling it
make sure you label your seeds because
once they go in that soil you will
forget because when the seedlings all
come up they all look so similar now
we’re going to move on to our Amish
paste and sweet milon I did do two trays
of Amish paste just because I wanted to
have options for having the strongest
plants and I might also put a few in
grow bags but these are going to be the
tomatoes that we make our tomato sauce
out of so I wanted to make sure that we
had a lot of
[Music]
them
my husband and I were doing seeds
together today and we were able to see
like the difference in our personalities
I’m a very fly by the seat of my pants
kind of person I just kind of wing it
you know get it done I don’t know how
it’s going to grow but we’re just doing
it and he’s more organized and
meticulous and he you know reads up on
the seed depths and all of that I
honestly as you can see I just fill them
put the seeds in sprinkle some soil on
the top and pray for the best that is my
personality so if you’re seeing this and
you are stressed by how I’m doing this
I’m sorry I did my seeds last year we
had really good germination we had
strong seedlings we had strong
transplants we did have a hail storm
which absolutely destroyed 90% of my
transplants that was just terrible but
we’re not going to have the sister Year
we’re not going to have any rued they’re
going to go in the garden well so I hope
that you guys are not not stressed by
how I do my seedlings if you are like a
meticulous person and this is letting
you like get anxious let me know in the
comments
[Music]
below so this is The Jeffy Hydro heat
mat and it’s the same brand as our
lights and we’re using this for our
tomatoes and our pepper plants which
like to have more warmth we are also
going to be using a humidity structure
over it I might be doing the cling wrap
or we might actually go and grab a humid
Dome I haven’t decided yet but we will
increase the humidity a little bit as
well but this heat mat is so nice and
warm you can actually feel the warmth
under the seeds and so I think it’s
going to work really well so we’re just
putting that to the side here I hope you
guys enjoyed watching me do my tomato
seeds I definitely overplanted as you
can see how many six cells we have and
each has got two to three seeds so yeah
we have overdone it in tomatoes but I
think it’s going to be awesome thank you
guys so much for watching this video I
hope it helped you I hope it gave you
inspiration for our 2024 gardening year
I will see you guys in my next video
bye
