you don’t want to do it dry there’s
one half a cup grab your special mixing
hoe here seeds can come up out of there
without any problem yeah that’s nice hi
everyone welcome back to our Channel
where we like to talk about gardening
homesteading and woodworking this video
we’re going to talk about how to make
the perfect seed starting mix and for
this we’re going to show you using this
container which is a pretty standard One
cart container we’re going to show you
the right ratios of the different
ingredients so we’ll show you what to
use how much to use how to mix it up we
got to S sift some perite here so that
you don’t have too big of pieces into
your seats already mix and then uh we’ll
mix it all up on the floor and you’ll
get to see the final product so let’s
get to it we’re going to pour some of
this peite into this screen down here
and uh sift it because it’s got two big
of pieces in there for a nice seats
starting mix mix you want a finer finer
grade of peite for your good seats
starting to mix if it’s too big of
pieces it uh this will make good contact
with the seed and you end up with not
quite as good a germination so you just
shake this around and you might want to
be outside doing this cuz it gets kind
of Dusty okay so can you just tell us
really quick about that screen what size
is screen is it yeah it’s 8 in Harbor
cloth you can kind of see it’s just
really small so it sips it out nice fine
pearlite you don’t have those big chunks
in it anymore mhm so it makes a lot
nicer seeds starting mix for small seeds
especially not so important for big
seeds
do three three
containers we’re just going to mix it on
the floor it’s
easier so three parts three parts peite
of peite all right fine pearlite all
right
and
then coconut
coar and that’s expanded yeah it’s
expanded so you don’t want to do it dry
so there’s two parts of coconut coar and
we’ll do three parts of the Pete Moss
and just regular organic PE Moss nothing
special about it mhm so we’ll just fill
up this
thing there’s
one now there’s three
parts of Pete Moss and then we’re going
to do one part of worm castings it
doesn’t make any difference probably
what kind of worm casting you get this
is what I prefer actually has the eggs
of the worms in here too uh so you get a
little bonus so one part worm castings
all right and that gives you the
good
microorganisms in there and then it’s
about two
inches of C in this container it’s just
a standard yogurt
container so
the Kel is right there all right so that
much Cel as you can see the C looks like
like
this this is fishbone Meal m you can use
other bone meal but the fish is better
and this has a little bit of nitrogen
and and a lot of phospherous in it for
root development um and so that looks
like kind of
Dusty so we’re going to do just the same
as the kelp same amount all right same
amount as the kelp about two inch just
like
that
okay and then we’re going to add just a
little bit of blood
meal just to give a little nitrogen kick
to start off
with
about one
inch right here okay one in
of the blood
meal right right there is blood me all
right blood meal okay know what does
that look like for people want to
see oh yeah little black beads kind of
put that in there and then we don’t want
to forget the uh micro so here’s our mix
that we’ve got so far looks like a have
volcano this is the powder and it’s
called vam
endox mhm and here’s
the the different species that are in
there of micro razing yeah yeah we going
need a cup just going to be a little bit
maybe a half a cup here
yeah half a cup it’s plenty all right
half a cup of Vendo micro yeah okay and
then we’re just going to mix this up all
right grab your special mixing hoe yeah
Special modified mixing hoe with two
holes in the
bottom we could put a lot more stuff in
here like rock dusts and all kinds of
things but you don’t want your ceilings
to be in here very long you want to get
them out in the garden as soon as you
can this isn’t what you call a potty mix
to keep a plant to grow a plant to its
maturity this is just for a starting
mix if you put too much nutrients in
here the seeds won’t germinate very good
yeah so it’s
purposely lacking a little bit if you
will on nutrients mhm otherwise you’ll
ruin your you overload your this
seedlings seed has everything it needs
to to support its life until it gets the
true leaves and so like with tomatoes
you need to get them out when they’re
only about 3 to 4 Ines tall and so this
doesn’t have to feed them much at all
this is more than plenty to to meet
their needs for that 3 weeks 4 weeks
should be around 9 quarts yeah 9 quarts
a little bit over 9 quarts add the the
other ingredients to kelp and bone meal
and stuff but basically 9 quarts and so
you can just multiply it if you want
make a bigger batch just multiply those
parts like we did
mhm okay so that’s our finished product
oh yeah that looks nice yeah it’s nice
and fluffy and your seeds can come up
out of there without any problem without
being hindered with compaction or
anything yeah yeah that’s that’s nice
doing like pumpkin seeds or some larger
seeds zucchini cook neck squash that
kind of thing you don’t have to sift the
peite you can just leave it the way it
is a regular size but with the small
seeds like tomato seeds peppers and
celery and all those kind of things you
need this fine mix well I hope you

  3. Your recipe is very similar to mine but i have never added the mychorizal mix. I just ordered the Vam from your Amazon link.

Just curious. Why add both coco coir and peat moss? Wouldnt one or the other suffice?

  4. I trusted you guys almost immediately without knowing why, subscribed halfway through this video, and the ending just validated it! Love this so much and thank you!

  5. That’s a great mix. But seems like overkill to germinate seeds in. Seeds have the nutrients needed to get through the germination stage and first set of leaves.

  6. Could you guys write down in the description the measurements for this and your organic soil mix. Would make things a lot easier to capture with a screen shot versus having to ffw or rewind to get everything

  7. This would be like a 300 euro upfront cost for me getting all those nice ingredients for your soil mixes. Gonna buy them one by one, what is the best ingredient to start with? I have coco, perlite, chicken manure, compost, epsom salts and peat moss already. Thanks nice videos!

  8. 3 parts Fine Perlite
    2 parts expanded Coco Coir
    3 parts Peat Moss
    1 part worm castings
    2" Kelp
    2" Fish Bone Meal
    1" Blood Meal
    1/2 cup VAm Endo Mychorhizea

So if that is a 1 quart container the 2" ought to be about 1 cup, the 1" ought to be about 1/2 cup, and is it possible to add extra coco coir instead of using peat moss?

  9. You guys are my new go to gardening channel. I'm really enjoying the content. I am putting in an orchard this spring here in Montana. Soil is very poor. Do you have any amendments you might suggest adding? I've also heard from many people that I should start the trees in just the native soil, let them acclimate without any inputs. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. A video on this would be great, if possible. Thank guys.

  10. I'm quite liking your videos so thank-you!, …..but I have a slight concern with this one. In order to buy even modest quantities of these ingredients it gets really expensive. For starting seeds, I tend to opt for a less expensive commercial 𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐨𝐢𝐥, then use Agrothrive organic fertilizer as the plants grow.

  11. I am loving your videos. I went to my local nursery to purchase some of this stuff and they told me “it’s too much you will kill your plants”.

I have 29 inch beds. I got a good deal on local compost so I filled the first 10-12 inches with it. The nursery mentioned I will kill my plants due to too much phosphorus. I was planning on filling 6 inch with top soil and the rest 10-12 inches with this mix. Would this be ok to do or should I remove the compost at the bottom of the bed? My mix would also include some compost at the top. I have purchased you recommended products through your link.

  12. I started my tomatoes in the mix with humidity dome and 78 controlled heat mat and so far 0/80 have germinated. Had nearly 100% last year using ProMix HP. If you have sucess with what you are doing, don’t look for better. I will have to restart and be weeks behind. No idea what could have gone wrong…

  13. Your newest Subscriber here 🙂 I have NEVER seen anything so detailed and perfect for starting seeds! THANK YOU so much for sharing this!
