Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. My first year with Greenstalks was last year. I just used some decent potting soil but had a hard time keeping it moist, so….I took all the soil out and amended it with coconut coir, along with other soil amendments ie minerals, fish meal etc. So we will see how I do this year. I have noticed that water can gush out the bottom pretty good even when the top is not completely filled like they recommend. Great to hear a recap on this beautiful garden accessory. Thanks Jess!

  2. Thanks for reminding me this was a thing! I got my Mom a Greenstalk for Christmas, and she just decided to grow some mini tomatoes in it. So, for Mothers Day I got her the plant support accessory!

  3. Good morning , I live in Lexington, SC. I have been going through your old videos searching for the soil and compost you use and low and behold there they were laying right out for me. I did already purchase the Baccto and Stout Ollie from my feed and seed store so glad I got the right ones. I would like to know where you get the micro dwarf tomato plants from or if there is a local place to purchase them. Thanks in advance, hearing it's gonna be a hot one this year with lots of rain. Either way enjoy.

  4. I received my first Greenstalk about 4 months ago and planted it with crops I have found difficult to protect from rolypolys (sow bugs, woodlice). The lettuce and arugula have thrived and yesterday I pulled the first carrot knowing it was immature but since it was crowded I decided it was just "late thinning". OMG, it was 10" long! I've never grown a carrot longer than 6" in the ground! I'm sold. 💚

  5. I just planted out one of my original Greenstalks with strawberries! I decided I needed more strawberries in my life. 😄 Going to get another one because I love growing green beans in the original (2 per pocket) and I want TWO Greenstalks full of beans this year! My Leaf is for greens, herbs, and random things I decide on last minute. I will be honest and say that I've NEVER gotten the watering system to work flawlessly and need to water the pockets individually to be sure everything is getting enough. The holes always get clogged. (I mean, really, it only takes one small piece of wood or perlite! lol) But I still love the product and only buy them on sale like this!

  6. There are so many things I would love to have, to support my garden. Unfortunately none of them are NEEDS so I must wait 😅 I did build my own garden tower from dollar store stackable planters, so hopefully that’ll work decent this year for my herb garden. Maybe next year I’ll get a green stalk

  7. Guess I'm a hold out. I have 2 and hate them….they are now laying all over the garden acting as single "pots". Expensive pots that's for sure. Everything gets root bound quickly….they dry out if they are loaded with plants. Just don't like them!

  8. I was so happy to see you posted today😊 Sitting here with my coffee and wondering if summer will be here this year. We are not generally in the 30’s nor snowing, but it is. So what better to do than be encouraged in gardening and ordering Green Stalks? I ordered 2 and used the discount, Thank you so much!!!❤ I am so excited to try, this is my 1st time ordering.

  9. Thanks for the Green Stalk info. Would be perfect for my son in a wheelchair so he can enjoy the gardening experience with me. Hope your time away has been enjoyable. I’ve been watching old videos of your Arkansas garden! Fun to watch how your sweet family has grown up. 👨‍🌾🍅❤️

  10. At first I was not having good luck with my greenstalks. I live in dry, dry Albuquerque and it finally hit me that, in this climate, I need to water the pockets, sometimes even twice a day. Starting last year, they have been great! Last year we grew herbs and super hot peppers.

  11. This is exciting. I haven't taken a lot of time to go back and watch many episodes that I missed throughout the years. I hope our support helps. Your Jessica. You inspire me.

  12. We just ordered our first greenstalk and setting it up this weekend!! Thank you so much for the wonderful tips using it!! God bless you and your family always!! Your garden is amazing and beautiful!! We are doing all container gardening this year! Much love from SC❤️🙏🙌

  13. I own 3 originals. I bought 1 to take for a test drive. I grew in it for 1 year or 2 seasons. I loved it so much I bought 2 more originals. I have them on the ultimate spinner base. They sit on a 16" paver that I purchased at Home Depot. I love growing herbs, flowers and lettuce/kale/spinach/Chard in them. I grew Anaheim and sweet banana peppers in them last summer and they did very well. I used wooden marshmallow roasting stick as stakes to tie the plants to for support. I alternated the plants in each pocket, 3 plants per tier. This year I am planting a variety of jalapeños , more herbs, strawberries and dwarf tomatoes. I love that they are made here in the USA and that it is a family owned business.

  14. Thank you Jess! I bought my first Greenstalks last year after watching you (and the big discounts were helpful too!) and am so pleased with them. Of course, living in Knoxville and supporting a local company is high priority too. 🙂

  15. Jess, how do your 6 year old greenstalks look? Are they faded? Mine are 3 years old, and they still look and feel brand new and sturdy!

  16. Due to working on my home repairs from the fire in January, I didn’t get an in ground bed ready. I’m using these and some 20 gallon containers for growing vegetables this year.

  17. I know that you are resting but it's nice to see you! I really like mine. I just have to water often. As I can afford I'll buy additions. Hubby got the spinners for Christmas. Now I need the watering system.

  18. THIS is the year I finally splurge and buy a Greenstalk for my grown daughter!
    She's got 2 toddlers,
    a husband,
and a full time job as a nurse.

Every year around this time she talks about how nice it would be if she had the time to grow her own garden, or even just lettuce.

Not only does she say she just doesn't have the time, but she just doesn't have any extra money for gardening either.

    And I get it.
    SHE'S VERY BUSY!!

I keep telling her it doesn't take that much time or money to plant some seeds.
    She doesn't believe me.

But hey, we all know that if we can get a set-up that makes things easier to grow, then it's quicker too!
And THAT'S when we can find the 5 minutes (or less) to throw a gallon of water into a planter!
And Greenstalk makes it just that easy!

    So THIS is the year!
    She's getting a Greenstalk!!
    Let the homegrown salads begin!!!

Thanks for the extra 10% Jess!!
    ♥️👍♥️
And Thanks Greenstalk for the sale prices!! ♥️♥️♥️
(Couldn't have done it without ya!)

  19. I got my first greenstalk this year. I have salad in mine. I'd love to put strawberries in one. I don't have anywhere that is flat …my patio is shaded

  20. I love my Greenstalk…..so much that I bought them for three households (parents, in-laws, and our BFFs) for Christmas. Everyone that has seen mine (or the ones I got for others) end up wanting one or have already bought one. This is a great gift that you can give to a household instead of lots of smaller gifts for each person. Even our BFF's kids were excited to get it cuz they wanted to plant strawberries and cherry tomatoes in them (like mine) that they could easily get to. I have the 5 tier but bought the mixed version for others because they all planned to use them for herbs, lettuses, cherry tomatoes, and strawberries.

  21. I have been wanting to buy the greenstalks. I didn't know what size. Thank you for the information on the 5 tier stalks being deeper containers. Makes sense.

  22. I have 5 greenstalks, love, love them! The base spinner is a wonderful game changer. I am growing onions, green beans, tons of herbs and medicinal herbs and of course strawberries ❤❤❤❤

  23. Just a warning to others, mine has tipped over in a windy day (wasn't even a storm, the sun was out, just regular wind) and it was on perfectly level concrete. But the good news is when I picked it back up, the planter was still fine and I was able to save probably half of the plants. I now wheel mine up against the house when the wind is going to blow.

  24. I have a question. I live in zone 6. So I have to protect my in ground strawberries in the winter with straw. I do deal with a lot of pest pressure in ground. If I were able to get a green stalk for strawberries. How would I overwinter them here?
