we are well into spring here in eastern North Carolina and about 2 or 3 weeks ago I went ahead and planted our Gardens here on the homestead we have had no shortage of rain this past season and with the Abundant sunshine and warm weather things are really starting to take off and today I need to get out and do a couple of Maintenance things here in the garden so I thought I’d take you guys along with me first I thought I’d give you guys a quick little tour of the garden just so that we can keep tabs on how things are growing throughout the season I always like to look back at these videos and see how much things have grown since the beginning of the gardening season to the end of the gardening season so here in the rais bed garden area we start off with a giant bed of peppermint now for those of you who have planted peppermint in the past you know how quickly it grows and expands and takes over everything I did not have plans of this peppermint taking over this entire bed but with last year’s growing season and us getting behind on some things the peppermint took over the entire bed and I just gave in and let it have its entire bed which is is fine we like peppermint we drink a lot of peppermint tea and use it for different uh medicinal things so we will probably be turning lemons into lemonade with this and selling some peppermint tea to our local friends and family as well in the next bed we have a couple of cabbages as well as some green beans that are just starting to come up um and so these trellises are here so that the green beans can tunnel up and over the trellis here if you look back in some of our past videos You’ll see the green bean tunnel that we like to do every year it just makes it so convenient for picking green beans throughout the season it provides a good shade in the middle of the summer and I just really enjoy seeing the canopy of green beans um through the growing season so on the other side of this trellis here we’ve got green beans that are growing to kind of Meet the other vines in the middle there there’s a lot of grass that’s growing in this bed that I need to get out here with my little weeding tool and take care of these were beds that I had planted some strawberries in last year and the strawberries themselves had tons of weed and grass seeds in them so we actually burnt these beds and tarp them covered them tried to kill off all of the weeds and grass that were in it and it worked over the winter season but now that things are warming up I guess there are just some seeds that were down deep in that soil that are trying to come back again so I will have to get back out here and get to work on those on the back half of the bed here I planted different types of beets and none of those has started coming up just yet next bed we have some strawberries these are really starting to take off now that things are heating up a little bit these berries are absolutely delicious these are sweet Charlie strawberries I do believe they are super red super juicy and sweet M nothing better than fresh from the garden produce especially after it’s been sitting out here in the Sun and getting nice and sweet it’s delicious in this next bed we have another trellis system up and over this is going to be our cucumber tunnel I’ve got two different varieties of cucumbers planted here I’ve got a pickling variety and a long slicing variety so this is the other side of the Cucumber tunnel here next to the bed you can see on the ground that some dill had seated and Fallen onto the soil and has started reproducing so I’m just leaving it because we do use a lot of Dill especially with our cucumbers to make pickles throughout the season so I didn’t have to plant any more Dill this year we’ve got plenty that’s growing here on the ground I don’t really mind weeds um especially if they are edible or usable so we’re just going to leave this dill and not worry about it and then the last bed on this side is full of wild flowers so none of them have started to Blossom just yet but they’re coming up and hopefully we’ll be encouraging for our pollinators to come in and visit our garden pretty soon you guys will have to pardon the little bits of wind today and also the noisy sheep in the background I’ve started letting our sheep come out of their pin and graze the pasture a little bit out here and sometimes the moms will run off and leave the babies inside of the pin and the babies haven’t figured out how to get out on their own just yet so they sit in there and they cry and the moms don’t listen to them so that’s what you’re hearing in the background on the other side of the garden this is the mirroring bed to this other wildf flower patch over here this is more flowers here which these are ones that we intentionally planted like nerum eonia in there and some different other things that are great for pollinators and also edible flowers and medicinal flowers that we can use for other things the bed directly in front of it we have some winter squash they’re large white skinned squash and the flesh is like a an orange color so almost kind of like a butternut squash but these will last on the counter for several months without Refrigeration they were great for preserving so I’m growing an entire hoop tunnel of those as well and then here we’ve got some green onions that have overwintered and they’re seeding out and still producing so I left them right in the middle to keep providing us with green onions then the bed directly in front of that one we’ve got more strawberries and then the next bed is another green bean tunnel bed we like to grow a lot of green beans my goal for the first year here on this land was to preserve 50 quartz and we were able to hit that goal and exceed it um and last year we did about the same we were a little bit less because we had such a busy summer we had to let a lot of the beans go but we’re still eating canned green beans from last summer and it is now the middle of April so we grow a ton of green beans they are a lot of work to snap and string and preserve and that kind of thing but they make for such a great meal addition throughout the year and we don’t have to buy green beans anymore so we will continue to grow green beans in our garden probably every year the other side of the green bean tunnel here has some collards which we have harvested our first batch of collards off of now leafy greens this time of year in our region will not produce and well for much longer um once we start getting consistently hot during the day and the night these will start bolting and turning bitter that kind of thing so really the leafy greens do best in the cooler Seasons here but I was a little bit late getting these in so we’ll get a couple helpings off the collards and the cabbage and then probably fill their space with something else um later on in the summer and then the very last or very front bed um of our raised beds are more herbs these are ones that have overwintered and then I have planted a couple of new ones in there as well but our Sage Rosemary and oregano just keep reproducing and coming back every year so that’s it for our raised bed garden area and then we have our Market row Garden here now this was a project that I just started last year we had the accident with my dad last summer and we were in and out of the hospital a lot so I didn’t get to put out a lot of gardening content last year but I still did garden and preserve um maybe just not quite to the capacity that I do every other year um but this year we’re planning on going full steam ahead so I have planted this entire Market row um slam full of vegetables and fruit so we will have a lot for our family to eat and preserve and to share with friends and family as well so I won’t take you guys down every single row because the plants are pretty small some of the seeds haven’t even emerged from the soil just yet I’ll just give you guys an overview so the first row is all watermelons and this is a variety of watermelon that I have planted in the past and had great success with and I’m praying that they do just as well this year because they were the best watermelons I’ve ever had the next row we have lots of okra and tomatoes different varieties of tomatoes there then the next row we have jalapeno peppers yellow squash bell peppers and then Z zucchini at the very end the next row you can see the greenery there is more tomatoes and then behind that we have a couple of loofah squash and then behind that I planted some artichoke seeds that I’m hoping will come up and um maybe we can have some artichokes probably next year if they come up this year I’m really doubting that we’ll get any kind of fruit off of them um but they were some old seeds that I had bought maybe like 5 years ago off someone on Etsy so I’m not even sure if they’re going to germinate if they do I would be so excited because artichokes are like one of my favorite vegetables right now for some reason I’m hooked on them the very last row some raspberries and some blackberries there on the end I’m hoping that I wasn’t a little overzealous with my planting and that um once preservation season comes I’m not kicking myself in the butt for all of the extra plantings so here behind the market row Garden I have this new new patch that I just started this year I wanted a couple of large beds for things that take up a lot of space I’ve got some potatoes in the ground here these are all like a golden variety I’m pretty sure and then beyond that I’ve got some corn and then beyond that there are some sunflowers and these are like the big giant seed producing sunflowers so I’m really excited about that my goal is to expand our production Beyond just what our family consumes also produce some to start supplementing our animals with as well I would love to get to a point to where one day we’re growing all the food that all of us need here on our property um but I do not have the energy for that just yet um but eventually maybe we’ll get our systems in line and that can actually be a possibility so the very last stop on our tour is our Orchard area we just put these trees in the ground last year um a few of them had been in pots for about 2 years before that and then some of them were just brand new from last year so things are still a little bit small we do have some that are starting to produce some fruit this year and since they are on their second year I have kept some of them I’ve pruned a lot of them off which is always discouraging because when you see a tree that you planted and have been waiting for it to produce um full of fruit it’s hard to get rid of any of them but I do that because I want the trees to focus their energies on growing those roots into the ground and establishing a strong healthy system so I’ve only left a handful of fruit on the trees that did start bearing so that maybe we can just get a little taste this year um but next year we should be able to get quite a bit more off of them these trees are just lovely I’ve been so happy with them which leads me to something exciting that I wanted to share with you guys I have recently partnered with the company that I have bought all of my fruit trees be root strawberri my seeds for my garden from and that is groworganic.com and I’m excited to partner with them to share with you guys the amazing products that they provide they carry all kinds of gardening and farming supplies on their website and I think you guys will really enjoy what they have to offer as well so I’m going to put a link in the description box below to take you guys directly to the website as well as a 20% discount code for our viewers they have so many great things to offer and I’m excited to keep sharing the progress of the plants and seeds that I’ve gotten from them through the years here on our channel so now that you guys have seen all of the gardens it’s time for me to get to work I need to get some traces going for my tomatoes because they’re starting to get to the height now that if a good wind comes it could knock them one way or the other and break them check back to see how I’m going to Trellis my tomatoes this year also how I prune them and help encourage them to grow bigger and healthier um throughout the season I will catch back up with you guys on the next video be sure to subscribe to our channel so that you can keep up with our gardening content this upcoming season as well as all of our livestock and other homesteading content as well if you like this video give us a thumbs up share with your friends and we will see you guys on the next one bye
