Growing & Harvesting Daikon Radishes in a Grow Bag | Container Vegetable Gardening

Daikon radishes grow exceptionally well in grow bags. A big advantage of grow bags is the ability to fill it with loose potting soil. The loose soil allows this root vegetable to grow long and straight. And, when it’s time to harvest the daikon can be pulled out with relative ease.

[Music] into this grow bag I’m going to finish this packet of uh daone radishes now these are a couple years old so I’m going to just finish them all up so instead of making individual holes for the uh radishes I’m just going to spread them out broadcast them and I’m hoping that at least 50% of these germinate because they are quite old but I know that they some of them are still viable because I have some other daon that I’m going to be harvesting in this video so I’m just going to use these up it’s a lot of seeds as you can see but the purpose of this is just simply to use them up and then after I broadcast them I’m going to put a thin layer of compost that’s been sifted okay so those are now that’s going to be a lot now if they all germinate I’m going to have to do a lot of thinning but I’m expecting about half of those to germinate okay so I have this Nifty little um sifter so I’m going to put some compost in there and sip this over the bag okay so here you can see the larger pieces of the compost still in this uh screen so I’m going to set this aside and here you can see this nice fine compost over those daone badish seeds I’m going to just spread that out so this looks good okay and the last thing I’ll do before I water it in so I’m going to put a piece of burlap on top of that okay purpose of this burlap is to keep that soil from crusting over so as the seeds germinate they’ll be able to come up through that nice soft screened compost and this burlap will prevent that soil from crusting over I’m going to take these close pins just just attach the Burlap to the grow bad it’s not likely to come off but just in case you never know about these Critters and the wind so this is just to keep this in place because uh I have had some of these fly off under some really windy conditions so I’m going to just secure the burlap in place go ahead and water this in okay and I’ll come out and check underneath this burlap every you know after about a week to see if those seeds have germinated and I’ll eventually take that burlock off and of course the last thing is to uh have your label I’ll just set it on top here for now let’s take a look at the daon radishes that i s about 6 weeks ago as you can see they’ve come in nicely out of all those seeds that I seed I would say about half of them germinated remember those were old seeds so I I wasn’t expecting a lot of them to germinate but you know we had a pretty good germination and out of all of those uh plants I probably thinned out about half of them so what’s remaining are around 8 to nine uh daon radish plants so some something is munching on some of these leaves I can’t figure out what it is but um come out here at night and see if I can’t see what’s going on but anyway we’ll give these radishes another I would say uh four to 5 weeks before we can start harvesting them okay so there you have it um little update on the daone radishes all right we’re going to go ahead and pull this one right here and so let me go now since this is nice loose potting soil this comes out very very easy and so there it is so there’s one back radish I’m going to pick think another one maybe two more and here is the second one we’ll go one more back here and there it is okay and that’s what we’re going to have tonight

  1. A very informative video! The daikon grow really straight in that grow bag! I’m sure this method would work well with carrots and other long root veggies!

  2. What size/height is your grow bag? I was about to plant some fracking daikon in a grow bag but just realized it may not be tall enough. Mine is only 10 inch tall.
