I might have figured out my favorite gardening hack and you probably have it at home I was at the Hydra shop the other day and I was talking to the guys that work there about what the current cannabis Growers are using to get rid of spidermites it’s always a problem in that industry so they pointed me to a couple $110 $150 gallons of product and I looked at the active ingredients and what I found is that a lot of the active ingredients were pretty much oils for spider might control typically mineral oil soy oil or some type of corn oil so I left the $100 per gallon pesticides there and I came back to our Greenhouse here and I knew I had a cheap olive oil but if you look at the active ingredients or the Main Ingredients it’s actually canola oil and then some extra virgin olive oil as you can see it’s a really clear a little bit of color and not a lot of taste oil so I decided to test this out on my plants and honestly the results are very addictive so far the antheriums and alas are really loving it the shine that’s coming to the leaves and the spider might knockdown is incredible the oil works by clogging the mouths typically and the pores of the bugs as well as the eggs and I tested this for a few weeks before I decided to show you guys just to make sure it’s safe look at this dragon scale the unfurling half moon so waxy and glossy and the new growth is coming out super happy but it’s very important how you mix oil and water because they naturally don’t mix so I’ll show you guys that but take a look at some of the leaves look at how waxy the plants get from the olive oil it’s like a protective coating on the surface and it hasn’t hindered the growth at all and just makes me a lot happier to look at the plants honestly I feel like this ghost is absolutely thriving with the folar spray and the monsteras get a sheen on them that is again just very addictive to to look at because they seem so waxy it’s like a leaf shine and a pesticide Allin one this is one of my favorite monstera leaves here so when I was analyzing the ingredients in these expensive gallons of spider mite control there was always oil and then an emulsifier using about 1 oz of oil per gallon of water it’s very easy to see that oil and water don’t mix but soap is your emulsifier it essentially allows the oil and water to combine so we use a few drops of soap and when you mix it around this becomes the perfect insecticide and effectively like a leaf Shine for your plants now you need to test the oil on a few specific plants before you apply it to all your plants I’ve also been adding in a little fertilizer to my folar spray about 1 ml per quart of water of leaf luux and of course some bti for fungus Knack control and then this stuff which is quite expensive this is neem with Aid duratin I talk about it a lot look at the active ingredient 3% aidara this is I think like 150 bucks per quart it’s pretty expensive but when you combine the neem oil with some type of mineral oil or a canola oil you can also try out an olive oil as the title suggests but test it on a few different plants this we use 9 MLS per quart of water look at this Majestic absolutely loving it and the amount of spidermites I found around the greenhouse after starting this combination spray has gone down dramatically so I hope you guys enjoy this hack it really has been a game Cher for me and dealing with bugs in the greenhouse I really appreciate you guys watching make sure to click subscribe and like the video and we’ll see you next week for another video about plants [Music]

  1. Ahhhhhh right on time!! Due to my recent plant binge 😇 then having repotted a few a little sooner than I should have because I was corm hunting… I have a few rooms of stressed out plants that are too much for the mites to resist atm lol. I ordered some beneficials for some of my begonias that hate being sprayed with anything but I’m definitely gonna try this on the stuff that won’t protest getting wet!

  2. A good idea, but you should use a fine nebulizer to mist on the leaves, the one you use just soak the leaves! 🥴

  3. The azamax is the real heavy lifter here. Oil can help, but the main ingredient of azamax is one of the only things that can get the spidermites where I live.

  4. Neem oil and castile soap has already been a well known alternative to expensive treatments, for many years. I personally add Spinosad to my mix on top of that.
Dish soap is NOT soap, it is a detergent. It is toxic to plants if allowed to accumulate. I am totally guilty of this mistake too!

  5. Any ways to help with gnats ? I keep getting them and I have plants that need water and I have others that don’t but it seems like my freshly water plants always has them and by time they dry out my others plants need water again I try changing out soil and now I have a a chunky mix for all my plants but I have the same problem Still and seem like they just moved into the plants the had moist moss poles any tips on how I could stop gnats ?

  6. I also had success with sunflower oil mixed in with dishwashing soap, some Colocasia were quite popular and spraying the plant did the job 🙂

  7. After searching for Azamax I just found out (like every time I am searching for usefull insecticides/fungizides) that its ofc not available here. We are really limited in solutions that still work against most pests (one of the last working ones is partially leaving the market this year), so predatory mites really is the way to go. Thankfully I can use them in my tents, but for most people with low humidity in regular household conditions it will really become a big problem longterm. Regular 'Bio' plant soil for outdoor plants is already full with fungal snats if you buy it in the garden center.

  8. My sister works for an independent family owned florist shop! They get in cans of spray that’s both a leaf shine/pest control spray specifically for the plants they need to make presentable that’s going out to funeral home like peace lily’s and things ordered by families of lost loved ones! The main ingredient is olive oil in it aswell! (Not sure if it’s a commercial use product or not!) I’ve also started making a mix of olive oil, dawn dish soap, baking soda, and neem oil and as a treatment and preventative and thankfully it’s been successful for everything except my dog’s hair on my houseplants so far! 👏🏼😂🤣

  9. I use coconut oil spray on my plants all the time to clean water spots on the leaves and it keeps pests away plus shines them up.

  10. This makes sense to me, the seed oils (canola, sunflower, etc.) are produced with a lot of pesticides to begin with, so that might further control the pests!

  11. Why on earth would you use BTI for fungus gnats on the foliage? Fungus gnats live in the soil 🤨 Also, anyone watching this, please be careful spraying oils on your leaves, it can absolutely burn them in the natural light. It’s similar to applying suntan oil on your skin, and then baking in the Sun. This is also going to clog the plants pores and make it difficult to breathe, in addition to attracting all kinds of dust and dander.
