Mulching Grass Area Video – https://youtu.be/9T4TrbtAUxs?si=AEL4E0D5EwhtyrLO

Now that we have mulched a significant portion of the grass in the backyard, it’s time to add two new raised beds in the backyard garden. These are amazon raised garden beds that are pretty cheap.

a [Music] hey y’all it’s Amanda and this is my Texas Zone 8 Garden and today we’re outside the Highs are only in the 80s so super excited and we are going to be installing two new garden beds as part of a new restructuring of my back Garden [Music] okay so um if you haven’t if you missed the first part um my husband and I laid down a bunch of weed barrier and then we’ve been covering a large portion of the garden with mulch as opposed to Grass which has been wonderful very very happy with it we’re having 104 feet of French strains installed along the back of the um Garden which will be really really good but where I’m standing right here we’re going to be installing a new portion of the garden I’m going to go ahead and adj the um angle of the video so you can see this a little bit better I can’t put the camera in the back because we just had major storms at so M and that French drain hasn’t been installed so it’s still super wet back there but let me go ahead and adjust and see if I can give you a better view okay so this portion right here is covered and it’s going to be all mulch all these plants will be gone eventually but right here where I’m standing I’m going to be installing two new garden beds they are raised garden beds I believe they’re minimum 24 in tall and um they’re elongated oval shapes I’ll put up some pictures to kind of show you and we’re going to have two of them kind of centered in this space lengthwise and then in the middle on a different video I’m going to be in uh constructing an easy DIY arbor trellis situation that’s going to go up and create a doorway right in the middle of here and then the goal is once that done we’ll do a video where we planted up we’re going to be planting a lot of the birdhouse gourds and the loofah on um that particular trellis but it’s going to work as kind of a grand entrance to the Garden eventually going this way once the French drain is installed I would like to install a bridge I know it’s not like a you know it’s not a real bridge but a pseudo um little bridge that you cross over to get to the back half of the garden and so the two new flower um uh the raised beds we’ll flank that with the garden entrance here and then we’ll walk through that I’m going to go ahead and take a few minutes and sketch out what that’s going to look like so you guys can get an idea all right I want to go ahead and sketch this out for y’all this is my garden journal if you haven’t seen the video I’ll try to drop that down in the link um basically I just keep a lot of notes but I also keep like sketches in here so and I like this particular Journal because it allows me to very easily remove pages and put Pages back in no problem just like that and and so let’s talk about kind of my thoughts and not I’m actually going to draw from this side so I’m going to start with kind of um the center portion or actually I’m going to start with the two beds so the two beds are kind of just long oval shape [Music] okay so it’s going to be two containers I believe they’re approximately 6 ft long obviously this is not to scale this is just kind of trying to give me a general idea and so we’re going to have a arbor trellis that’s going to be the width of the actual containers which I think is about 2 ft and I plan on using pressure treated 4x4s [Music] so something along these lines so that I would have this entrance through this area now if we’re looking at these on the side like if I’m over here and I’m kind of just drawing in an area where I’m looking at the side here’s my little vision bubble so we’re looking at the side of the actual trellis portion it’s going to be two 4x4s so it’s going to be so you’re going to um actually have a gap it’s about 2 ft apart and we’re going to go ahead and run lattice through that so that anything I plant in here like if I plant something here it can climb up through the lattice that’s over here on the side which I think will work really really good good so the idea is that we have stuff climb up through the side I would love if I had some you know very cool um birdhouse gourds hanging here or some lofas you know that kind of stuff with you know Vines and stuff and that would be for this year I think in the future I would um potentially put a climbing rose or something like that I think it would be nice and then in these containers it’s going to be um a lot of perennials um I really want and then I’m going to do some trailing angles so um over here I’m really wanting to do um quite a few bulbs so we’re going to be doing lily bulbs uh which will be really nice to have in these containers and then they’re going to be mixed in with additional um uh uh perennials including things like cone flowers I might put some obedient plant which would go um wild in those but it would be in a container which would be very cool so this is kind of the general idea for what we’re going to do so what we’re going to do today is we’re going to work on constructing both of these um containers both of which I got off of Amazon and we’re going to um get them situated outside and go ahead and fill them for the first part of this project [Music] okay I ordered these from Amazon and I’m going to put the link in my Amazon storefront which is listed in the description of every single one of my videos so apparently I thought I ordered oval but I ordered rectangle and now I remember why I ordered rectangle I ordered rectangle because it matched the existing race beds so um totally forgot about that so they are not going to be over they’re going to be rectangles which is fine let’s go ahead and open this and I’m going to go through this making one of these so yall can see the process what did I order this doesn’t look like what I thought it was supposed to look like so this guy this this instructional manual has instruction manuals for like 15 different garden beds so let’s look up the one that I’m actually building I was looking at the wrong thing I was like well I’m missing a ton of Parts but let’s find the one that I’m actually building in here all right so this is 71 in Long by 35 in wide by 22 in tall there we go all right we got everything we need so this one does not come with the greenhouse cover I guess I may should decided not to do that does come with the plant support okay so we’re good to go basically this is put together with a little bitty bolts um that come in here I opted to build this inside because um this is time consuming and I didn’t want to just sit out there and bake myself in the Heat and these are going to be big Gardens I’m really excited to have all the extra space for these all right and basically what I like to do is I like to lay out where the sheets go so there’s four long sheets and two short sheets [Music] okay so I’m the center of the garden bed so these are the short sides and then you have two long ones on each side just like that and the other part are the corner brackets [Music] and you have a corner bracket at each of the corners I’m excited how much more space I’m going to have for planting it’s going to be great now um this do come with a pair of gloves and because the metal is sharp and you can’t cut yourself however I find the gloves to be more cumbersome than helpful also like they’re made for people with really tiny hands and I have really big hands and let me see if the corner sheet goes outside or inside corner sheet goes inside so basically we just lay up the corner sheet [Music] and I usually like to [Music] start with a middle section I’m putting it [Music] together it’s always hard to get the first F started I we start with a end so you just basically put the bolt in and then it has like a butterfly nut to go and twist [Music] on and after you get several of them in then you can go back with a um screwdriver and tighten this and I’ll probably tighten after I finish each little section all right once you get a couple of them in then it gets way easier start coming through we’ll say having long arms helps quite a bit all right and then I’m just using a screwdriver to come through and tighten each of these okay so one done these take a long time together not um it’s not fast I typically do them my by myself throughout the day and I put on YouTube gardening channels so that’s what I’m going to do put this in F and let’s put this one together [Music] [Music] okay so we did all the corners and now for the center part there’s a series of um there’s a series of holes that goes in the center to help support all of this together and to keep it stable in the middle and any of these like metal beds like this should have something along these lines so basically it just has some where you pop them together that there should be four of them looks like they want us to put one on the top and so basically you come in and there’s actually like a pre-made hole you just screw them together like this and it looks like they want us to do the first and then Skip One and then do two all right and then it has me skip one more Yep Skip One More and do one okay and then we just finish up with the remaining bolts okay everything’s put together like the size looks good [Music] [Music] okay [Music] so basically what I’m going to do is I’m going to measure from these columns out and right about 34 in see if I can’t get these to a similar distance h it’s okay all right next we got to start filling them okay so my neighbors were throwing out um a bunch of logs because of the recent storm so I picked up a bunch just to toss in the bottom of these beds so we’ll go ahead and do that first now I have find found that doing a single layer of the um of the branches works better than doubling it up because it’s harder when you add multiple layers it’s harder for the soil to work its way down immediately and so you see a whole lot of settling with it and I found that out when I was working on the shade garden race Garden so even though I would love to fill this up with tons and tons of um logs we’re I’m going to do some because I want to make sure that I don’t get massive settling on my soil once that’s added okay I’m going to be adding a mixture of my favorite potting soil which is called bm7 you can use a raised garden bed soil if you want as well I have a SE sneaking suspicion that I do not have nearly enough soil so might have to just start with one bed and then do the other L of the suit [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] now I think I’m at about 10 bags of the bm7 and uh maybe six bags of compost definitely have to go get more to fill up the other in my head these were smaller but I went back and looked at my notes and know this is what I planned for I definitely will have to top this off in the fall most likely I bet I have to top it off with maybe six to eight bags of compost should be fine it be great I’m going to go take a shower and then we’ll come and take a look at what this looks like okay got my shower feeling good we got one whole bed filled up and we’ll wait for the budget to cycle we’ll pull the other one up later but feeling really good about that this is a nice open space it’s over 5 feet which is great and this will lead to the arch that I’ll be installing there that’ll be the more the episode coming up next and it’s hard for me to like I said get back there because um it’s so muddy back there and all these plants will be gone to been sweeten so you’ll have clear walkways the walkways are about 30 in so two and half ft but basically all that’s gone and then all the plants around there are gone I think it’s going to work good I think the silver ties in really nice the silver over there I wasn’t able to locate this color but I still think it works really nice I’m happy to have a little bit of a taller bed just so I don’t have to bend over as far now this side there’s still lots of room for displaying plants and all kinds of stuff like that the other side there’s not nearly as much room because the existing um raised beds aren’t like equally spread out but there’s still a good size walkway in here so still a really good size walkway let me take it over here so y’all can see looking good and then once all these are installed I have about 20 bags of cedar mulch coming that I bought from my daughter’s band fundraiser that be good real quick over here lianis are blooming need to come through and do some harvesting super pretty sweet I’m super excited to get this started this is going to be fabulous I’m I’m just really excited and this was all just big open space with grass not more than six weeks ago so very excited to be able to get rid of the grass and really focus more on the gardening aspect which is awesome I would eventually like to have many more um vegetables in these two gardens which would be really great and then eventually hope hopefully all that grass will be gone someday you get a lot longer till we get there but someday we’ll see all right you all thank you so much for following along with me today this was a tough project um doing a lot of work with building them inside was a smart idea so it wasn’t as hot but hauling all the bags I am worn out and as soon as my budget cycles for the month I’ll go and invest in the rest of the soil that I need for the other container I definitely could have put in a lot more of the logs in here to save myself money however like I said I didn’t really like the extreme settling that I experienced on my shade garden where I put a whole bunch I put like um over a foot deep of logs and that was harder because I put a lot of perennials in the shade garden and then watching it continue to settle was difficult so by doing it this way I’m hoping my settling isn’t as it’s extreme and I don’t have to adjust as many plants I am going to be putting some perennials in these Gardens um which will be really fun one of the first ones I’m putting in is a purple Salvia that my friend Donna brought me during the garden tour so that’ll be super fun to get this in here and we’ll use that Salvia as one of the showpieces of these garden designs all right you all I hope you enjoyed today’s video drop me a comment below let me know if you would guess 10 bags of soil and I think six bags of mulch that was a rough one to um move all of that and be sure to check me out on my social media Outlets including Instagram Facebook and Tik Tok as always she’s a mad Gardener or decorator or anything else that she wants to be thanks y’all

  1. Looks great, maybe filling the bottom of the beds with logs or some sort of you don’t need so many bags of compost?

  2. Put wood logs along the bottom. Less soil to add. I just planted 4 raised beds this way less expensive. I’m loving my raised beds so far!!!!! Mine were from gro right. So easy to put together l

  3. The drawing of what your plans are is going to be so pretty. Do you think about maybe adding a couple of benches to sit at and enjoy all your hard labor? πŸ€— with a beverage of your choice. 😌

  4. Hi, love the new raised beds, I have some , but they are a bit shorter than yours, I used a lot of old newspapers & cardboard I collected over the winter to add to the bottom before added the compost & dirt, looking forward to the next video, Happy Gardening, Ann from Ohio , btw, good drawing πŸ™‚

  5. Loving how the backyard is looking Amanda! I am so sorry for what you all are going thru in Texas. Hope power is back for everyone soon.

  6. Wow, your plans are really coming along nicely, Amanda! I'm loving it! I've just bought four new raised beds and holy smokes is soil expensive these days! I opted to make my own with 1 part top soil, 1 part peat moss, and 1 part compost, then I top it off with a layer of the good stuff. I mix it in a blue kiddie pool and also use the logs at the bottom. I found that if I water in the soil as I go, I skip a lot of the settling I was getting later when I was planting. I don't know if that would help with yours, but it might be worth a try?

  7. Glad to see you've bounced back so quickly from the devastating storm. Love your design. I put together a 17" high vego bed, recently. I did one layer of logs and debries. Also, underestimated how much soil I would need. It's been 3 months and very little settling.

  8. You need to take a vacay to reboot πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚..so much work and I know it will be beautiful with the flowers and trellises..great video 😊😊

  9. Good morning. Yes I too would be exhausted after filling just one of those raised beds. What a change to the backyard. Amazing. Looking forward to seeing what veggies or plants you plan to grow. So exciting, it is like christmas in early summer. Enjoy the rest of your day.

  10. I seldom ever get the right amount of soil or mulch. I usually underestimate. The topsoil idea is an excellent one
It's probably good that you ran out of soil for your project. That way you physically have to pace yourself. I want to get my project done, so I work really hard and get a bunch done. Then next few days I am so exhausted I can hardly go. Not my best plan.

  11. It’s gonna look awesome πŸ’ͺπŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ lots of work though hauling those bags πŸ˜…

  12. Exciting to see new projects in the works for you. I love the raised beds with the arbor growing vines. Everything you do always looks beautiful. Looking forward to another garden tour in person! It was so wonderful to see it all and meet and chat with you. Now if we can just get some sunshine and a little less rain. My weeds are outta control to the point I'm ready to adopt them as "new garden plants." LOL.

  13. I have put together a lot of those beds and they are such an improvement to my garden. Yours look so great already. Can’t wait to see the plant, arch/trellis etc. I love the projects you are doing. All that lugging is so hard but the outcome is so worth it. Thank you for the sketching session; that is how I work out things too.

  14. Amanda, now I'm scared! πŸ˜²πŸ˜¨πŸ˜±πŸ€‘ I'm adding MANY new tall raised beds, mostly for veggies but some for cut flowers, and I may need to take out a loan to fill them! (Just kidding on the loan, but not on the being scared part.) Seriously, I need to keep costs reasonable. I plan to use a layer of organic matter, mostly from this recent storm, a layer of cheap but okay topsoil, and then a layer of some good container mix with compost and worm castings. Now I wonder if a free load from Chip Drop to fill between and around the bottom layer would be a good idea. People are concerned about buried wood becoming anaerobic and/or drawing nitrogen from the soil. Maybe I'll do it anyway to save money and compensate by adding more sources of nitrogen as needed. I could refrain from planting many perennials the first year to allow for settling, and I would top off my beds with fresh compost each season anyway. Any thoughts?

  15. It may help to avoid so much settling if you were to water the soil as you place it. That would help eliminate air pockets as you go rather than allowing the air pockets to settle after you plant your perennials..
