Plant Propagation

Fig Propagation Question – What are these strange things growing?

Im new to this process. My neighbor gave me a cutting from his fig tree. He suggested that I start in water. I used rooting powder and placed it in water which i change 2-3 days. It's been about a week and I noticed these white cylinder growth on the stem below the water. I initially assumed it was roots however after reading a few posts on Reddit, others mentioned fungus, larva, or mold. I don't want to negatively effect the propionation by removing these.

Does anyone know what this is?

Not trying to be a smart alleck here, but you’re propagating a plant. You have applied a product to it and submerged it in water. My best guess is the white things on the stem are roots starting to form.
