hello design lovers I’m Ashley chers and today I’m sharing my ultimate patio transformation and very favorite outdoor decorating ideas to get you ready for all of the sunny months ahead did you know that 70% of people wish they had a more charming and inviting patio that’s a huge number so today I’m excited to share my very best tips for taking your outdoor spaces and turning them into an Oasis now I know you’re going to love today’s video so be sure to hit the Subscribe Button as we drop a new design video every [Music] week now to give you an example of a stunning patio transformation I’m going to take you through the design and construction of our patio extension and our cut flower garden now before we added the patio extension and cutting Garden off of the back of our house I will say that the space was uninspiring it was grass and I had a couple of hydranges along the back wall of the house now we live in Arkansas the summers are super hot and we needed a covered patio for entertaining and a place for us to relax and unwind in the summer months now of course this is a common issue for everybody we all want to have a beautiful covered space for us to be outdoors and enjoy nature and not be in the direct sunlight a couple of other things that we had to have in our Outdoor Oasis was a really gracious seating area for us to entertain family and friends we wanted a dining space we wanted an area for our Grill and outdoor cooking Essentials we wanted a fireplace a TV and then of course I had to have a cut flower garden now all of this needs needed to be designed in a way that it was beautiful welcoming and that it accented the architectural details and materials that we had on our existing home first things first when I started designing the layout and footprint of the patio extension there was a few things that I had to keep in mind we had an exist existing exterior door that came off of the back of the house and we didn’t want to have to move that and then above the area that we were putting the new patio exension there’s a secondstory window so we knew that the roof line needed to fall below that window and that would dictate the pitch of the roof line in addition to that I needed the footprint of the covered patio to be large enough to accommodate a large sectional seating area dining area and outdoor kitchen and on top of that I wanted the sight lines from all of those spaces to look out into the woods and the Beautiful ferns Beyond now speaking of sight lines sight lines are so important in design in interior design and in exterior and garden design so when I was thinking through how I wanted to create these beautiful Vistas and Sidelines I needed to make sure that all of the cedar posts that are on the patio extension line up with the posts on the fence line because I knew that I wanted to to have these really pretty little outdoor patio lights that zigzagged between the posts and I needed them to all be symmetrical now when it came to designing The Cut Flower Garden I had two primary directives one of them was to get as many flowering plants as I could within the space and the second was to keep out the deer so I designed the cut flower garden to flank the covered patio and I was able to include perimeter beds that are all about 2 to 4 ft deep and then six raised beds that are 4X 12T this gave me ample space for all of my flowers and also created an area within our wooded 5 acre property that gets full sun now this patio and garden extension at our home took a ton of planning honestly but it was so worth it and my top tip for designing an outdoor space at your home whether it’s a patio Garden porch deck anything like that is to start with a simple sketch it doesn’t have to be extravagant you don’t have to be an artist grab a pencil and some paper and just do a line sketch with Dimensions so you can make sure that you are designing something that is the correct size and that fits your needs another Pro tip when you are designing your outdoor spaces whether it’s a garden bed a patio extension or really anything is to use some wooden steaks and some orange marking tape and to actually tape out the area that you are wanting to create so you can visualize it in person this is just such an easy thing to do also if you already have an existing patio or porch and you’re wanting to furnish it with new furniture or maybe even add some pots or something like that you need to see if the scale is right Pro tip is to use painters tape and tape out the footprint of the pieces that you’re considering on the ground you could also use this tip indoors we do this all the time with our clients just to make sure that the scale and the pathways Around furniture is correct this is truly a golden designer hack and it makes choosing furnit fure and rugs so much easier taking the time to create inviting outdoor spaces will reward you tfold when it comes to enjoying your home and I hope today’s video inspires you to create a welcoming and warm Outdoor Oasis for [Music] yourself so here we are now we broke ground on this patio extension and garden 2 years ago and we completed the patio extension obviously before we did the garden the garden we planted about a year and a half ago most of the plants some of them we added the following spring but as you can see this patio extension and garden literally looks like it’s been here for as long as our home and it is my absolute favorite place to spend time I start my day out in the garden with a cup of coffee many times I’m deadheading roses or just inspecting the plants and then we often times end our day in the garden and underneath the patio having dinner together watching TV or even just experiencing the beauty of nature for us being able to fully enjoy the outdoors and the landscape the sights and sounds of nature is truly transformative now I’ve got a couple of outdoor decorating tips and ideas for you regardless of the size of space you have my first tip is to create an inviting seating area now this could be a sofa and sectional and a side chair or it could just be a small bench as long as you have a place to sit down relax and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors my second tip is to include a dining table in chairs so that you can enjoy an al fresco meal now this could be a large dining table like a 96 in that you can seat eight people at or it can be something as simple as a small little folding cafe table and chairs just as long as you have a place to sit down and enjoy a nice meal and the wonders of the outdoors lastly approach designing and decorating your outdoor spaces like they are an extension of your home because they are there are so many great pieces of furniture rugs lighting even pots that you can include in your patio design or your garden that brings personality to your outdoor spaces and makes a cohesive statement with your home’s Interiors now friends if you
