A conservationist working to save Sumatra’s rainforest | Indonesia Special | Gardening Australia

In South Sumatra, conservationist Pungky Nanda Pratama is dedicating his life to conserving what is left of Sumatra’s rainforest. Subscribe 🔔 http://ab.co/GA-subscribe
He is thrilled to hear the call of the rare white-handed gibbon, a species that mates for life, which he describes as “super romantic”.

To show how many endangered species live in this rainforest, Pungky and some friends set up a camera trap project to photograph passing animals. Their footage includes the Sumatran Clouded Leopard, Sun Bears, and Asian Golden Cats.

Indonesia’s iconic wildlife relies on the health of these tropical rainforests.

The area where he is walking is supposed to be protected but already there are signs of open canopy due to illegal clearing, probably for coffee plantations. Palm oil and rubber is also grown in this region.

Pungky is working with local government agencies to collect protected flora from cleared land. Head of conservation for Region I, Martialis Puspito Khristy Maharsi of the Natural Resources Conservation Centre (BKSDA), says extinction is a real threat for some species.

Another threat is poaching for the flora and fauna itself.

Rescued plants are transferred to a large, purpose-built greenhouse. Here it is rehabilitated and propagated. There are about 5,000 specimens here, including hoyas, orchids, aroids, nepenthes and ferns. There are also ant plants (Myrmecodia tuberosa), which have a symbiotic relationship with ants: they provide habitat for ants to nest in their bulbous roots and receive protection from the ants who attack predatory insects.

Orchids such as the critically endangered primrose-yellow slipper orchid are often poached by orchid hunters, despite being protected by law internationally. By propagating through tissue culture, the team hopes to reduce pressure on the plant and return them to the wild.

The urge to collect exotic plants has fed this illegal trade in rare plants.

To help empower local communities on the front line of habitat loss, he works in schools to teach children about the plants and animals living in nearby rainforests. He teaches in 9 schools, some a six-hour walk from the nearest road. He says conservation is not a one- or two-year plan, but a lifetime plan to get communities involved and help find other ways to support their families.

He hopes that people will come to understand that humans depend on nature more than nature depends on us.

[Music] I’m grow up in Java it’s no much Forest left in Java but U when I’m decide to move to Sumatra for conservation I can feel like it’s the best place for me to leave after I open my doors I can of see a lot of things very interesting in Sumatra Punky nand pratama is dedicating his life to conserving what’s left of sumatra’s [Music] rainforests is white handed giens not say I’m white handed GI more rare and like so many of of us his energy comes from spending time in Wild places very special moment for us hearing them kind of like luckiest thing I’ve ever had so cool they are Monas and always stay in a couple till their dies which is super romantic and you hopefully F just go we can get the clear shot of [Music] them [Music] in an attempt to demonstrate just how many endangered and Elusive species live in these rainforests Punky and some friends started a camera trap project they’ve captured some incredible footage it’s kind of like a new information for us to know about the biodiversity in inside of the Jungle Indonesia’s iconic Wildlife relies on the health of these tropical rainforests look at that one they have a little babies on it this m Li monkeys endangered species in sat Sumatra they only eat the young leaf over the trees and we really like it to see them right now long time ago this area is a pristine Forest it’s supposed to be protected but you can see around it’s like open like you can see lot of light it’s kind of like a a sign of like a destruction starting in this area illegally for coffee plantations that uh threatened the flu and phone in this area these small plantations within protected areas creat subtle but continual habitat loss and in some places it’s not subtle at all much of the world’s supply of palm oil and rubber is grown in this region py is collaborating with a local government conservation Agency on a project to rescue Flora from cleared land like this old rubber Plantation this is the area that um we always like looking for because we know know some of orchids like growing in the rer [Music] plant rescued Flora is then transferred into a large purpose-built Greenhouse to be rehabilitated and propagated roughly we have about 5,000 specimen uh including hoes Aro and ver and aenis all of them is native species from Sumatra this one is a mordia tuberosa is andt plants and very famous right now as ornamental plants and we found this on the ground and you can see a lot of damage on the leaves this is Orchid colen wanana it’s 6 month since we rescue from the the destroyed land it’s been growing so well in our Greenhouse this Orchid called a Pap pedum primum is endemic from Sumatra this are critically endangered and protected by low International day and also like highly poached by the Orchid Hunter I’m very happy we have this specimen in our greenhouse and hopefully in the future we will like working with this orchids in a tissue culture and we would like to bring them back to the [Music] W as the world has fallen in love with tropical plants puny has seen the illegal plant trade sore people from another country trying to yeah one more more exotic plants and that’s make the population of plants like this plummeting down and Sumatra is like highly damaged by that to empower communities living on the front line of habitat destru construction py has yet another project underway I like a single father with thousand kids I have education programs and it’s focusing in the area that have a highly damaging of illegal looking and also uh Wildlife conflict py teaches in nine different schools with some Villages a 6-hour walk from the closest road it’s really important to tell the clear information to the children because when I’m talking with children they will like absorb as much as possible the information and passing out to the parents and that’s why it’s kind of like homemade uh educator people sometime like thinking conservation kind of like a project in a a year or two year or five year but conservation kind of like lifetime work you need to get into the community to understand what they need people need help economic play and people will like it do everything to support their v as a conservationist we need to think about that not just a blaming Community like shoot the animal or even like take the orchids or whatever being a conservation is we need to be flexible with uh with everything that happening around because of conservation is like a collective work for everyone one as a human we are a part of our ecosystem and one of its species like disappear human will disappear too as long as a people like a People Like Us trying to share more about nature share more about loves it’ll be like uh yeah hopeful and I believe that people time by time will you understand how important nature for us because yeah nature not depend on people but people depend on nature that’s the important things people to know and to [Music] understand
