Certified doesn’t always mean competency

Local tree trimming guy, but is ISA licensed, still this is the kind of work he highlights. Unfortunately, getting a license doesn’t mean you actually know what you’re doing, so do also look at their work history for exactly this reason.

Honestly, I find the ratio of competent arborist to incompetent somewhere on the order of 5:1. I’m not an arborist and I know 10x more about the trees than most arborists who really just know how to use chainsaws and be confident around customers.

There are a myriad of complex reasons behind this. I think the largest reason would be money. People want a crew of 5 to show up with large trucks and spend all day and pay $500.

I’m on here all day answering simple questions for people that go unanswered. Doesn’t happen with electricians or plumbers, why here? It’s rotten at the core, the profession.

Reddit skews for good arborist, don’t take this place as the mean. The actual people willing to stand up and say shit and be judged by their peers is small, but the good ones are seemingly all on here by my account.

What’s the deal with these kinds of stories? Is there any kind of training or can any old nobody just start chopping trees like this calling themselves an arborist?

Is there anyway to report an ISA licensed arborist who does this? Seems like they should loose their license or fined or something.

What time of year was this done? Did they die, or did they produce new leaves? What kind of trees were those?

  5. I spent a couple thousand on a tree guy who definitely was NOT an arborist to prune 4 trees in my front yard. He butchered them just like these, excepted they were much larger and so it was even more depressing. After a couple years realizing that they were never not going to look ridiculous, I paid another company a couple thousand more to remove them completely. I just planted two American sycamores as replacements. I hope whoever lives here after I’m long gone enjoys them.
