Plant Propagation

Is this ready for soil?

First time propogating. Started with 20, down 7 and this is the only one with roots like this.

It should be ready for soil now right? I'd put it in a light potting mix indoors.

It's a lilac. 🙂

Yes, I would say it’s ready. And a lot of propagators say that once you have secondary roots (i.e., new roots growing off other roots), then you’re ready to put it in soil. I tend to agree with this!

Give her some patience as she may drop a leaf or two as she acclimates to soil.

For a pot, use something that’s like 2inches in diameter. Not big, just barely larger than the roots. If you have too big of a pot, you’ll have too much soil, which means you won’t have enough roots to take up all the water your soil can hold, and that leads to root rot. Keep it under a light for a few weeks.

Small plastic cups like for a kids bday party or reception are a nice size and let you see the roots’ health as the plant acclimates. I buy them from dollar tree. Just poke a couple holes in the bottom.

If you don’t have a pot this small, wait to pot it until you get the right size. Pot too big = death for baby plants!
